Is there a Peter Pan mode?

...2nd star to the right and on 'till morning.

Whilst flying around in normal flight or supercruise, I often see interesting star clusters or nebula out of the window.

Is there a way to select or identify these locations so I can go off exploring?

(I understand I'm seeing a 2D image of a 3D star cluster and the interesting cluster may just be a very boring destination once I get there, damn it, I want to see)

It's not the easiest but you can do it, it involves rotating the Galaxy map and orientating yourself against your current route (at least it does for me) but you can locate those nebulae/star clusters and head to them. While your kinda right in the fact they lose something close up, they do occasionally have some interesting things to see in them. Maia is a good system if you want to go into a nearby nebula

Thanks for that, will try it out.

Maia was the first place I went to when I first got an asp. Nose dived into the black hole. Although I know the physics, felt a little disappointed it wasn't bigger...

it would be a nice enhancement to have a star map view that reflects your field of view so you can navigate like that, it would probably be quite a lot of work to create though unless there is some coupling of the background to the skybox with the star catalog its rendered, which at some level there must be of course to render it in the first place of course
