Is there a story line? Or Quest line? Old player asking

So I played quite a bit back in the day, when the game launched, and then when horizons landed I played a fair bit then too.

I don't remember any story or quests, outside of the missions.

I played ~20 hours when void opals came out, not since then though. THis past week I picked up Starcom Nexus, and it's basically a really crappy version of ED, it's top down, you do all the same stuff only so, so much more basic, old school 90's graphics.
And I'm just loving it, following the missions which lead you to explore more. Reminded me of my first favourite space game from the 90's, Hard Nova ( I was a little kid back then, didn't know the first Frontier games existed).
It got me thinking, why am I playing this little dinky $25 game and loving it so much when I could be playing Elite Dangerous, which is objetively better in every way?

The story line, it's open ended gameplay like Elite, but there is a loose story you gain more and more as you go through the game.

Does Elite have this and I missed it trying to grind for bigger ships and credits? Please tell me

No, there is no story line or quest line. You can read some tourist beacons to learn about Elite's history, but that's about it.

Yes, there is some LORE to be seen in-game, but this is a far cry from a storyline that you participate in.

So my answer would be no, there is absolutely no storyline. I'd love some.

There is lore(generation ships, INRA bases, etc). But there is no in game storyline(s) to follow.
Bit of a shame that.
I'd love to see multiple storylines branch out depending on what you do as a player.

I figured. I had hoped I skipped over something big.
Maybe they'll add something like this in their big update. I know everyone is excited for whatever new ship or feature is coming, but now that I realized what the game was missing (for me), I'm really hoping it's a story
