Is there a technical reason not to have the Galaxy map and local system on HUD?

I'm always slightly annoyed when I have to use the Galaxy map and system map - it takes me away from inside the ship. Could we potentially have it appear on the HUD (to avoid breaking immersion?) obviously it would be problematic if the HUD is blown in combat, but that might actually add to things.

I'd also like the HUD used for communications from factions - mission offers whilst flying through space etc.

Just a thought.

I believe Frontier had the same thought as you, and that they did try putting the galaxy map on the HUD, but it was found to be too small and cluttered to be useful in their opinion. I'm 90% sure I've seen a post from one of the dev's to that effect sometime in the previous year.
.
As for more use of the HUD, again I agree with you there. It annoys me that I can open comms to other players on the HUD (albeit awkwardly, and having to look up 'cus the comms panel is usually out of my line of sight), yet to dock at a station I have to use a separate side-menu? Why? Also, where are the voice comms. and mission interaction seen in the cap. ship concept video?

Station docking is on a side menu because you are less likely to do that in full flight, while you are more likely to open comms in flight. The most frequently performed actions/needed info in flight is most central on your HUD. Stuff that is less often required/performed is more on the side menus.
