Is there a view mode that gets the camera to track the target

Games like GTA and AC have buttons which when pressed you face the target.

I couldn't find something similar in the control menu. ED must have this, surely?

Thanks

I think you're looking for head tracking. Not a push-button solution and involves extra hardware but would provide the experience you are after.

I've seen what you are looking for in a couple flight sims, but not here. May not be something they ever implement.

The whole 'padlock view' thing has come up a few times before. The developers seem against it, even though head tracking and VR are acceptable(?) Some people are also against it, seeing it as an 'instant win button' (which it isn't, with 'hold to activate' implementation, losing line-of-sight losing lock after a time, and gimbal limits). Honestly, if a flight sim had been released in the '90s without some form of padlock view it would have been laughed at... but today, we don't even have a rear-view mirror. o_O

i would totally love a padlock. I dont really see where it would help that much, you can see there positon on the radar? and you can see the target ships oriantation in the target window. Really padlock just looks and feels awsome and more imersive. If the devs feel it gives some sort of advantage waht about the people with tracj ir and or oculus? its ok for them to have this "advantange"? Again I don't see it providing and advantage all info you would gain from line of sight on the target can be seen in the hud. This is just a visual/feel thing. IMHO
P.S.but seriously needs to happen

Problem is that some ships have such a restricted view that half the time you'll be staring at your own bulkhead. We'd need a 3rd person mode (other than the action camera) for it to be effective. But yeah it does work well in other games.

this game has a sim feel to it and if there pushing back on the padlock i really doubt there would be a 3rd person cam that's useful. I'm down for the padlock because it seams natural, its one of my fav features of slightlymads shift and now project cars. The helmet cam tracks the racing line. (basically padlock) The 3rd person cam in ED I'm personally more picky about and wouldn't wan't a 3rd person cam that's useful in combat. I would love to see one where I could still fly the ship. (aka full control but no HUD of any kind)

I always wanted trackIR but with VR on the horizon I figured I'd save the cash. Then I discovered faceTrackNoIR and it's wonderful. I simply can't play Elite without it now.

Works similar to track IR but uses a webcam to track your head. search you tube for elite / facetracknoIR. If you've never heard of it, dont have VR or TrackIR, you'll thank me for pointing you in its direction!

Camera angles you get in the outfitting screen, and the debug cam are in one word.... pathetic, compared to most modern games.

I use IR LED Headtracking, but i'd still like a 3rd person view for day to day travelling, I can understand why it shouldn't be used for combat though as you just get to see too much around you @ once, but it would be cool if you could use 3rd person view that automatically changed to a forced cockpit view once your hardpoints were deployed.

The classified camera is a piece of work.. I love that it was added but I hate that tool..
I would give just about anything for that to get an improvement and the removal of those STUPID BOUNDING BOXES!!!

The debug cam was given to us by FD out of courtesy, as it was not originally meant to be used by players.
I think most of us hope that FD will eventually find the time to expand the options of the debug cam into something with more functionality.
I believe it would be smart to do so as this game offers a lot of opportunities for cool player movies and screenies.
This is already acknowledged by FD in the newsletters, so they know there is a lot of demand for it.
Personally I believe this will happen eventually, but FD has a lot on their plate with this huge project.
As always... patience is the word.

did you read the whole post? its a immersion thing. What i meant by it would help that much is that it wont provide a advantage over someone not using it. I wouldn't just use it in combat either. I'd more than likely pad lock any target, sspace station, salvage container ect. Anything it would let me really because if i was really there i would be looking at my target/objective whatever. Not staring forward.

I think that this is a really great idea. I have recently discovered facetrackNoir, and i'm also building an 3ir clip, but to have a tracking cam, that just positions your head to the target so you can focus on them would be great, its very easy to implement for frontier, and would relieve a lot of hassle when playing without any kind of tracking.
