I reported this as a bug ages ago but nothing was done about it, when I press 2 to focus on the chat panel I'll automatically be typing in the chat box, meaning I can't use Q and E to navigate to the friends tab, multicrew tab, etc. without first pressing escape which is a huge pain in the backside, or if I'm accelerating it'll just spam "wwwwwwwwww" in the chat. Is this working as intended and if so, is there a way for me to disable it? It never used to be like this until 2.2, I think.

There is an option to change this. In the Options menu, under the "Mode Switches" subsection, look for the line "Looking at Comms Panel", and change it from "Focuses the Panel" to "Shows the Panel".
EDIT: Actually, that might be the wrong one, the one you need is probably actually to change "Auto Focus on Text Input Field" from "On" to "Off" (also in the "Mode Switches" section).
