?is there a way to search for a squadron in a specific area?

Had a look at the filters in game, but couldn't narrow it down to a specific area, such as colonia. I don't really want to join a squadron in the bubble as I just got here.

Any third party sites that do this?

There isn't a tag for Colonia, and a lot of the squadrons operating around Colonia don't have "Colonia" in their names, so you're probably out of luck with that.

This is a list of the PMFs
https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/factions#yes or https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/reports/control will show you a bit about the size of each faction.
Most of the active ones then have an entry at
https://inara.cz/squadrons/
which you could use to find them in-game or contact them separately. (I have contact details for most of them if you can't find them there)

Alternatively just fly around in Open / big PG for a bit and see what squadron tags the other players have.
