Is there a way to track specific commanders / ships?

First, a little bit of background. I was running through a 3-stop trade run through Empire space over the weekend, getting interdicted by NPCs almost every single time I entered the final system. I'm in a practically naked Asp - no combat upgrades yet, two E1 (I think) Beam lasers - with a 60t cargo capacity. Most of the fights are pretty straightforward. I had an NPC Federal Dropship run from me while he had 7% hull remaining, which was probably the hardest of them. Point is, I was able to complete the run.

I fire the game up for half an hour before bed to get a bit more trading done when I'm interdicted in that same system, this time by a player CMDR. There's no dialogue from him, no warning, nothing except for his weapons fire. He's in a Cobra MKIII that he's obviously kitted out for combat and I seriously wasn't making a dent in him at all. I was able to get away with about 20% of my hull remaining.

Almost immediately after making it back in to Super Cruise, I was interdicted again by the same player. There were literally seconds between successfully engaging Super Cruise and being ripped out of it again.

Game over.

I wrote down the commander's name in case I ever encountered him again but it got me to thinking. Is there a way to track this fella down? In game, of course.

I've never used the interdictor, but isn't there a cool-down or something that prevents him from doing this to you?

And to my knowledge, there is no way to track someone ingame.

add them as a friend and if they accept check your friends and private groups options, it says exactly what solar system they are in.

I was thinking, it would be really good if they could introduce a tracking bug/ dart. You can fire it at a ship with no shields and it sticks/ clings to their hull. This lets you track the ship. Different grades of tracker bug could offer tracking over longer ranges, or even not alert the target that they're being tracked (a stealth tracker bug, if you like). Coming in for repairs would be when you'd find and clear attached bugs.

This would make bounty hunting more of a hunt, and facilitate hunting of players.

This is one of the zillion reasons why it'd be fantastic if there were a fully-featured API.

So many things could be done to meta the balls out of this game...

Post a "60 tons of gold for the location of commander x" advert on the forum or shout it in local comms around the system you've met.... maybe he's got a "friend" who'd rat him out for a little extra cash :)

(tons of gold is the usual currency for player-set bounties)

Also try hyper-jumping instead for this reason exactly. Combat kitted ships very rarely have wake scanners.
If you don't like that, pulling the speed down and dropping back to normal space right after you entered supercruise (and waiting it out) would work to some degree as well - if he can find your low-wake though....

Since SubSystems are visible to other Players - flying around a practically undefended Asp isn't a good idea... On a known/frequented rares route even less ;)

Agreed, I definitely need to do something to upgrade the ship a bit more. I was considering a bit more exploration into one of the nebulae that are in the area to beef up my bank balance a bit more before I try again. I suppose given the profit I was making on the run, I should have known it was likely a known route!

The guy probably saw your gear and noticed that your Asp posed very little threat - a potentially easy Target.

Probably. Still, with all the threads on the forums about the Honour among Pirates, etc. I would have thought a bit of conversation would have been nice!

Still, a Cobra shouldn't (?) mass-lock you, so submitting and FSD'ing away should have been easily possible more than once (?)
If you realize you have a serious problem - consider making an escape via Hyperjump instead...

As much as I like to remind myself that back in the day with my mid-1980s Acorn Electron version of the game I was quite the pilot, I'm afraid my combat skill - and tactics - have worn away to not much at all in recent times. I would love to be able to put in the hours to play the game that I used to but it just isn't possible any more.

I'm assuming it was a Cobra based on the fact that I was interdicted so quickly after escaping and that as soon as I was destroyed, it was a Cobra doing a flyby of the explosion. I was so completely thrown when the attack started I didn't get a target lock on the ship at all. I was too busy trying to get away!

Also, FSDing out at full Throttle basically guarantees your Interdictor will end up right behind you again within less than 10sec.
Rather FSD out but be at idle and make at least a 90deg turn - chances are, your Interdictor will follow you... and race right by you (at least not end up right in Interdiction parameters again).
Gives you more time to check your Options...

Thanks for the tactical tips :)

Sir, you are introducing grievers' heaven if some sort of feature like that gets implemented outside of friend list.
