Is there an API to interface with Elite: Dangerous?

One of my hobbies is to integrate outside tools with my games, some games it's easy, other games seem to feel it's a mortal sin to break the mold. What I would like to do, ideally, is feed the side screens to other computers I have, such as my Android tablets, or a second desktop. This would allow me to set up a physical cockpit by simply having my devices correctly placed. My goals for this would also include having a second comms keyboard, as I tend to be pretty social with friends while I play.

I imagine a well programmed joystick emulation with my various microcontrollers could serve some of this function, however it still would be very cool to take my Android, iOS or even Windows Tablet and use it to request docking permission, or target that contact, or to toggle systems for the emergent work of blockade running I've seen some folks do on youtube.

GIven an API, I could probably cook something up, as could a lot of people who are a bit more gifted than I am.

FD is working on an API, they already closed some files that some 3rd party apps been using, they say they want to promote the community, but for that, we need a decent API.

Give them a bit, they're working on it :)

Heh, fair enough, they did just release the game, which means they're probably getting swarmed with bug tickets (I know I had to submit one, sadly). I may cook up my ideas and post them, though I admit I've been babied by the likes of Eve (which Elite's fully stolen me away from, thankfully) which had to implement an API because people were stealing identities through the pre-API tools. While that's a negative reason to implement such a feature, I'd hope the more positive reason of "This'd open a door to many cool features/creations" would be one.

While the economy is still NPC and per-player, the risks of theft are a lot smaller than they'd be once player trading and transactions are implemented, if those are on the roadmap.

I'd like to think the option to take one of the side screens to an external device would be an equalizer when compared with folks who currently have head tracking or Occulus type devices, I feel like I'm at a slight disadvantage to those players due to having to press the buttons to load these screens, despite the truth being that it's a quick button press to look at them and a button press on my gamepad to look back.

You can achieve much of what you desire using Roccat Power Grid on Android.

If only they had a Windows 8 / Modern App I could use with my Surface Pro; I don't have an Android Tablet or iPad. :(

I might rig up a similar concept with vJoy and a simple server, and a Modern App client. Can't see it being too difficult.

The only Metro capable machine I have is the tablet I play ED in, not viable unless I'm wasting time while in Whisper Space.

I own embedded devices that can emulate keyboards, pointing devices and joysticks. I'm an Arduino Sketch and a couple nice arcade or even cockpit buttons away from a full console if I want.
Though Roccat looks interesting, I'll keep it in mind.
Still won't let me display ship status though, which is the part I can't emulate with my hardware or that software. I also don't own an iOS device, so sadly, I can't check out the app.

I think it would be really great to have a site that could allow users to create profiles to share their exploration routes, similar to google's "My Places" yet automated with the ED data.

My goal's to have side screens on my tablets. Apparently the iOS only app does this but my collection is the opposite of that, sadly.

I have an Ipad, ive never noticed a feature in the app to allow anything like this.. all you can do is check your market in the last station you were at.. and read the galnet.. otherwise pretty useless..

unless i missed something huge in the app of course.. which is possible since after 5 min i never loaded it again

My only view of this app is a picture on iTunes' website since I don't have compatible hardware.
