The cool thing about that inara page is that it helps you to visualize the Engineers progression tree. As for what mods to apply to what ships? Unless you have a very detailed guide, there's going to be some trial and error involved. The best way to git gud at it is to just start rolling mods. G1 mods are great for experimenting, and the mats can practically be found in your seat cushions.

You can import journal/log and you will get number of possible tries per blueprint (works only on registered accounts ofc.)
Also if you select module type from top menu, it will list you which engineer upgrades it and to what rate.
