In open it's every man for himself. Whoever has the quickest docking request reflexes.

Is there any cons/negatives to doing the solo thing? does it mess with any stats or anything that may come up later in game?

If you dip into solo you can't go for the "Race to Elite" thing (which has probably been won by now anyway). Other than that I'm not aware of any other downsides. I wish they would put in a proper queuing system, us Brits can't stand a disorganised free for all, we need proper queues. Hit the request docking and get a polite message, "You are fourth in the queue". Why thank you computer I love a good queue

Only if you were part of the competition to be first to Elite. Switching between the different modes doesn't affect anything in the game world. If they are in heavily populated space some people switch to solo to land then back to open. It gets round the problem of full stations.

I find I easier just to stay away from Lave and the nearby systems. Have never been refused docking permission.

Lol. Having so many UK players I'm surprised we haven't automatically defaulted to waiting patiently in a line outside the stations.

I play on Mobius rather than Open. It's a PvE environment and I've seen literally two blips so far that were other commanders. And I've been to Sol and Lave systems.

It's a big, big galaxy. Try and dock or settle somewhere away from the starting locations and you will have far fewer docking issues.

Outposts have that problem. I've flown down to the pads and flashed my lights at pilots who've just been sitting there asleep hoping they're not afk! Just wait it out if you've got to turn in a mission or quit and replay solo mode if its taking ages.
