Newcomer / Intro Is there any way to surrender to system authority ships?

I've just spent the last hour grinding bounties in a res zone and *accidentally* hit a system authority ship and a whole mob of them ganged up on me and destroyed my ship before I could jump.

I lost all my bounties in addition to having to pay my insurance. So I'm kind of off.

This has happened to me a couple of times before. Is there a way to... I dunno... say sorry??

Yeah - die. ;)

Seriously though, there are ways of minimizing the risk but the new friendly-fire system gives you just a fine for the previous level of "public enemy number one bounty" - to be destroyed from incurring an assault bounty you must be being really reckless. Sorry but it is true, that is what the new fine is all about.

One tip though - before engaging in any combat, lay-in (plot) a hyperjump course to a nearby system - then if you become wanted you can high-wake to safety by selecting "next in route" (have a key bound to it for convenience) and h-jumping away.

I didn't test it yet, so not sure but in the current version 3 of the game, according to patch notes the threshold for gaining a bounty by shooting non wanted ships has been raised so you must have fired more than once if they started shooting back at you.

I was trying to be careful. The one time in an hour a system authority ship swooped in front of my target when I was firing and they all go mental. It was quite hard to avoid them anyway, every zone I go into is literally crawling with them.

Trigger control...it is a skill to learn. Good luck!

The moment all dots turn red on the radar, retract hardpoints, 3 pips to engine, 3 pips shields, boost.....boost.... boost..... low wake

If you are using VA then I would suggest creating a "Bugout" command that automates the whole process. Works great for me...

There are ways to reduce the incidences of friendly fire but they will either reduce your effectiveness or require engineering.

The solution available to everyone is to fit Turreted weapons and set them to Target Only mode, they are more expensive and do less damage per shot but can track targets over a larger angle and stop firing when something gets in the way. They are not popular with the fixed weapons were good enough for my ancestor in his Sopwith Camel so they are good enough now crowd.
If you have access to the right engineer you can shoot smart rounds that basically self destruct rather than hit the wrong ship.

Bounty hunting in a RES is not without risks, but when you become experienced at it, you should never be killed by the Feds after you mess up. Firstly, you need to be attentive to any messages that say that you've been charged with assault or murder. The moment you see one, you must turn around, put 4 pips to engines and boost away from the feds and up into the sky clear of the rocks. You must keep 4 pips to engines all the time and the other two to shields. After hitting the first boost, put your weapons away. Make sure that you're travelling at right angles to the plane of the rocks. As soon as you're clear of mass-lock, engage your FSD into safety.

You should have 100% success rate using this method, even when using the basic Sidewinder. There's a couple of things that will help with your success: Firstly, you must react quickly. The aim is to get far enough away from the cops on the first boost so that their weapons can't do you any harm. If you delay, you'll be taking heavy fire. Secondly, speed is more important than shields, weapons, jump range or anything else when you're in this situation, so always make sure that you have the best thrusters and power distributor you can get before thinking about any other upgrades.

Ya, no, but there should/could be? Submit, retract weapons, apologise, pay fines on the spot...

Maybe something for the suggestions forum?

Well, from a certain point of view, you are saying sorry.. by letting them destroy you.

[DarthVaderVoice] Apology accepted, commander. [/DarthVaderVoice]

I can understand why they made the cops so hypersensitive about player fire. Allow any kind of "apology", and people would abuse it, "apologizing" to the cops until the cop ship is destroyed.

The point is that they already did this. Friendly fire is now just a fine not a bounty. You have to do more than accidentally clip with a stray shot to earn the new Assault Crime - bounty / dead if not quick.

You can suggest they raise the threshold between these if you want - in the meantime people need to try to control their fire better.

Come on. It'd be pretty simple to add a cooldown. Attack another non wanted ship during this time (5, 10 mins or so) and you'd be attacked and destroyed even if you surrender again
