They will have been dispersed by the time this game is set.
Not only is the game set 1000 years in the future the pillars are 7000 ly away so there's 8000 years of decay to account for.
Also almost all astronomical pictures do not show just visible light, there are a melange of wavelengths far above and below the visible spectrum, if you could go and look they would appear completely different from the photographs.
Yes, but you still could see them (well, not if they allready would be dispersed), they might not be that colorfull - propably more reddish, less green and blue colors but still clearly visibleAlso almost all astronomical pictures do not show just visible light, there are a melange of wavelengths far above and below the visible spectrum, if you could go and look they would appear completely different from the photographs.
I was smack bang right in the middle of it yesterday.Hmm, you close, or actually "there"
The pillars are only a tiny piece of the whole nebula.
There's a couple of unique ones which might interest you. There's the Barnard's Loop cluster with Horsehead nebula for instance.I would think such a populair nebula, and the most populair Hubble picture would be inplented in the game.. If not, its, ... disapointing.

Some of the planetary nebulae are reasonably well modelled.
You can check them yourself by going into galaxy map (in the right-side menu), go to the navigation tab and type what you're searching for in the field there. I think if you type Eagle, you'll go straight to it.
Pillars of creation have already gone apparently. More reputable journal here.
