Is there anyway to remove the haze around certain stars in the background?

Hi

I have just embarked on my sightseeing journey.

Some stars in the background starfield, presumably certain classes of stars, have an annoying haze around them. The stars look bright and distinct without it and It looks really fake because the haze looks very similar on all of them - same size etc. It really sticks out like a sore thumb.

Any idea what that is? Is it possible to remove?

Thanks!

You need an apochromatic refractor with FPL-53 glass - you’ll get pinpoint stars. I guess you’re using a standard achro from the haze halo effect on stars you’re describing. Wait... sorry, wrong forum. Thought I was on Cloudy Nights astronomy forum there.

Carry on.

I am a console peasant so haven't used it myself, but I like the sound of @Old Duck 's mod and wonder if that might help?

Old Duck used to be a console peasant as well, so not all hope is lost.

Are you on the CV1? I use old ducks mod with the HP reverb, res cranked up ingame and through the portal, 2392 x 2344 per eye. Also using the 4K background Mod.

Hey dude

Rift S

Unfortunately it's an effect added to the stars if they're big enough.

I have added a screenshot on Old Duck's Immersion mod thread if you're interested. :)

Seriously though I often get hazy stars through my Dob - I always put it down to air turbulence, are you saying it could be my instrument?

The haze spots or "halos" are little tiny nebulae. I've speculated on their purpose in this thread.

There is no in-game way to remove them. Since they're nebulae, I assume Old Duck's nebula-killing mod will kill them too.

Bad seeing (turbulence) gives wobbly/distorted stars, bad collimation gives warped stars, bad/dirty/foggy optics give hazy stars. Take a look at your primary mirror just in case.

(Sorry OP!)

Indeed, it could be any, some or all of those factors. That’s the thing with astronomy, you just have to try to rule each one out individually, depending on your instrument and prevailing conditions. One of the reasons I opted for an apo refractor over a reflector such as a dob, was the convenience of being able to eliminate collimation as a factor from the outset and never have to worry about it again (unless I get clumsy and drop the thing). But I don’t want to start a refractor versus dob war on the Elite forum - plenty of those shenanigans already on Cloudy Nights! In the end it’s like anything else though, personal preference, and I fully admit a dob’s superior aperture wipes the floor with my refractor for DSOs, however pinpoint my stars may be.

Sorry OP, off-topic. Anyway, yes, I also get the impression that Old Duck’s mod is great, though I haven’t tried it yet. I’m only using “Dustbuster” currently, to remove space dust in normal space and supercruise.

Cheers.
