Is there really no better way of finding named targets?

Everything I've read says to basically aimlessly wander around the target system in supercruise, looking for "Unidentified signal source."
It seems like I will find one of these things, then two or three more of them pop up while I'm trying to navigate into the first one I found. Then, regardless of which of them I exit supercruise into, the target is never there. There has GOT to be a more intuitive way of doing this. I make loads more credits in much less time just by hauling slaves here and there. Anyone have any tips other than what I've already described?? This is frustrating.

You can also just fly about in supercruise, and wait for them to appear on the scanner. Then interdict.

I never do the "USS Investigation".

That's an option but there are many other ways to blaze your trail in E: D but I'm not telling anything more because I don't want to spoil you the surprise.
