Is there some kind of "scam" related to joining a wing?

Been having a stab at the CZ's in Ross 310 (finally) and I've noticed a bit of an odd trend...

I I like to find myself a CZ with no other players in it so I can give my Corvette a chance to properly stretch it's legs.
I'm zipping around, blasting everything in sight and I'll see several other players arrive, one of them will send me a wing-invite, I'll accept and I'll realise I'm now winged with all the new arrivals.

I then carry on blasting and, within a minute or so, I'll realise that the other players have vanished again.

I guess, maybe, they get hacked-off that they aren't getting a chance to make many kills but I was also wondering if this might be some kind of "scam"?

Do wing-mates automatically get a slice of any CBs you've earned or something?
I was wondering if, perhaps, it might work in a similar way to a player joining a ship in MC, sitting around for a few minutes and then leaving, taking a share of any bounties with them.

TBH, I've never deliberately done any pew-pew in CZs in a wing 'cos I always take a powerful ship which doesn't need any help so I don't have any idea how splitting CBs between a wing works.

When you are in a wing, you get a "slice" if you hit the target at least once.

If your wing mate kills the target without any assistance, you don't get to share.

That sounds fair enough to me.

It's weird,though.
Seems like there's groups of CMDRs flying things like Viper 4s or Vultures (usually ranked Dangerous/Deadly so not newbies) who just arrive, ask to wing-up and then vanish a minute or so later.
I've had one group do it at least 3 times.

At that rank, presumably they could bring more to a fight if they wanted to but it seems like they're happy to play the part of "Pilot Fish" to my "Shark".

Not really fussed, as long as I'm not actually losing anything to them.
If they're happy to gain a few CBs by tagging ships I'm attacking, good luck to 'em. [up]

I think they do get a cut of your experience and by cut I mean cut as in you lose what they gain. And I don't think they have to do damage to get it. Might not be right on that though.

that is a bit odd, yeah I am dusting off my Corvette too for the first time in 6 months, got 2 new size 4 Multi-cannons Overcharged specifically for it, I have no idea why I didn't in the first place as they melt shields in seconds. ;) kind of wishing I did gimballed though....

as you were saying it is possible they may of been freeloading off a few kills....Actually...

as a possible theory it could be Wing missions.... I bet it's the kill count. they get random to do half the work and they reap the reward by booting you at the end.

I have no idea why that might be or what's their agenda. :D
I don't wing up with strangers, so the only "disappearances" I've encountered are due to one of my friends being kicked out of the game by some server brainfart.

Regarding their ship, though - I actually prefer smaller ships in CZ, too. Very often you may see me in the Viper Mk:IV or a Courier, there. It always seemed to be that in a bigger ship I draw too much aggro. Yes, killing is more comfortable if you have 10x the DPS of a Courier, but I never enjoyed it as much.
Instead, I kind of get in sync with the CZ, zipping from one fight to another and using my allies as bullet sponges.

This is actually quite possible as an explanation. I haven't tried that, but it's possible that, although you don't get the bonds if you don't participate in the kill, you may still get the kill to count towards the mission objective.
Interesting...

I don't think so, I have winged up before and never lost anything. I only do it for respect of not stealing kills from allies. no penalties apply. :)

I think the long version is that you are being used. :(

Well, I can think of one logical reason. Suffice to say I never really played hardcore bgs like some'o'those peeps over here do, so correct me if I am wrong on this but as far as I know turning in a combat bond worth billions of credits has equal effect to the faction influence thingie to turning in a combat bond of a couple hundered credits acquired from a single kill. So people just come in, shoot a guy, go back cash in and repeat for max efficiency. Or so I know.

Likely a common misconception.

The answer is no.

Unless you actually tag something your wingmate is hitting, you get credit for nothing. So just sitting there letting someone else do all the work is a waste of time.

Bounties, Combat Bonds, kills. None of it is split unless you actually put in the effort and hunt together. Laziness is discouraged.

It may be they are getting ticked they can't get any kills but in truth, there's no such thing as kill stealing since you get a cut if you simply just tag something that explodes. But not participating means you don't get any credit. They may have left and forgotten to drop you if they felt they weren't even getting a chance to tag your targets.

Yeah if they are working the bgs then it is better to do short runs and hand in only a few cz vouchers at once, so they could be working on that and that explains not sticking around. It might be nice for them to say hi to you though.
