Is this a good DBE exploration build?

I'm thinking of using a DBE as exploration ship to get to Sag A. I currently have this build planned ---> https://eddp.co/u/xi4TkpPr

I would like to hear some opinions about it, like what could be changed. I still have to engineer it to maximize it, I know. A bit curious about the max jump range when engineered, I must admit.

I'm currently using an ASP X as my exploration ship with a jump range of 46 ly. The ASP X does have a slot for a extra module (currently cargo for when I find valuable stuff when driving around the SRV searching for materials) and a 6A fuel scoop, so refueling is done about 3x faster then the DBE can.

Is it worth dropping my ASP X for the DBE or does the faster refueling time and cargo slot justify the use of the ASP X?

- you want a detailed surface scanner. probably just a coriolis mistake.

- build looks generally fine, but if you are taking just 1 srv, you can take a class 4 afmu.

- if you disable the afmu, you can run a class 2 powerplant

- if you like, check out the builds here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/354475-The-Dead-End-s-Circumnavigation-Expedition ... some highly experienced explorers bringing dbe's

- as for AspE/DBE ... that's mainly about what you enjoy flying more. on long distances with neutron star boosting they are on par in speed - the AspEs fuelscoop makes up for the bit lower jumprange, and the other way round. The AspE is probably the best allround explorer, bit like what a vulture is for combat... the best tool for thr general job, but getting boring fast for some. as they share most moduls, you can test them both on short trips (eskimo nebula, california nebula), and decide later, which you love to fly more. as you spend a lot of time in your ship exploring, enjoying flying it is the most important. core wards stardensity gets up, so jumprange isn't very important - you could take a viper mkiv if you'd like ... or a corvette...

As per goemon above.

If you do some L5 engineering only on the FSD for your build you can get 50+ ly from it. That would radically cut your total jumps down for that trip. Because while you don't need a big jump range to get there...

I cant add much to what Goemon said, except if you engineer a 2D power dist to eng focussed you could still boost shaving a little more weight off

then the usual ENG mods to lighten the weight and maximise range ;) but that's just me.

Looks pretty good to me. You don't need (or want) to keep your AFM powered on all the time.
Only turn it on when you need to make repairs.

The only improvements I could make to your build would be to size down your power plant.

A 2A plant is plenty to power everything. Just turn off your thrusters when you want to turn on your AFM.

With some minor engineering you can also drop your Power Distributor down to a 2D and still be able to boost.

Neither of these changes will make a huge difference in your jump range so they are no big deal.

A range boost mod to the FSD and Enhance Low Power mod to the shields will go a long way to improving your range and power/heat dissipation.
