Is this an indication of a possible black hole?

I don't have an image, but in one system I called up the map and there were two stars, each with some planets, then there was one gas giant planet lined up next to no star at all, but just an X (that was its representation in the system map). Clicking on the X didn't reveal anything. So am I to believe that there's just this random gas giant floating free of any particular star in the system?

There are black holes in the game and you can visit them and see the gravitational lensing.
Getting too close will fry your ship

No ... that large planet is orbiting the binary pair of stars ... hence the X is placed between them.

What you are describing here, Queebatron, is that the planets as indicated are orbiting the center of a binary system. They're not orbiting either star, but rther the center of gravitation for the pair of stars together.

No.

That means that the gas giant is orbiting the common centre of gravity of the two stars. So one star orbits the other, and the gas giant orbits their common centre of gravity.

Actually bodies always orbit their common centre of gravity - it's just that usually that happens to be inside the larger body. If you have two similar sized bodies though, it will be some point in space between the two. That's why you can see some stars have a circular orbit themselves - something is pulling them around in a circle.

Visit Nox if you can - there are two stars that are almost touching - the orbit line of the smaller one just skims the FSD boundary of the main star. Quite a sight.

I hope they introduce wondering black holes, they are theoretical after all. Ha imagine piloting your ship then suddenly death...maybe not lol
