I recently bought an X55 Hotas which has been an endless source of fascination to my two year old boy. Rather than let him loose on Elite which I think would be too much, does anyone know of any children's applications that are nice and bright and shiny that use a joystick in a flying sense?

Of course, my enlightened attitude may change if I see him swinging on it! :)

Also, I realise this thread isn't strictly on topic.

Congrats on the x55. Read alot about it. Very mixed reviews. What are your impressions? I'm personally thinking the x52 pro might be a better choice for me (I only fly E: D).

Let your boy loose in the single player scenarios. The sooner he learns, the better. :)

Now that I've got past a couple of problems, I really like the X55. There're more than enough buttons/hats/toggles/twangers for what I need to assign and the feel of the stick is very nice, now that I've put the most suitable tension spring in there. This is the second weakest, for my preference.

I did have a problem with the buttons on the stick not responding but this was due to the connections needing wiping down, which I did when changing the spring. There is also a known issue with not being able to do the windows calibration on whichever part is plugged in last. It's something to do with the power levels on USB. It's under investigation so hopefully will be sorted soon.

I find the actual usage of the stick to be nice and smooth, even the twist which others have complained about. The throttle is very, very smoothe too.

All in all, I'm very happy with it and, hopefully, this isn't just coming from a 'bought it so determined to like it' angle. I've not been able to spend a great deal of time with it due to medical reasons but this should improve before much longer.

Yeah, the whole usb thing. As I understand it, it's important to use identical ports (don't mix usb3 and usb2 ports). I hope everything works out for you buddy.

When I was a kid I spent countless hours on Flight Simulator 4, the basic principles are fairly accessible to anyone, but I'm not sure if it'd still work well with current joysticks. Maybe a slightly more recent one should do the trick, but they increased in complexity with time.

Let him fool around among the asteroids in the first single player scenario using m+k if you must. :smilie:

I let my 4 year old fly the SP missions using Thrustmaster Warthog and OR dk2... He knows if he breaks either he is grounded for life.

I can't speak to the X55 BUT the X52 Pro is simply fantastic. I bought it purely for Elite, and it's easy to set up and use. Works beautifully with the game. The twist rudder capability is fantastic (no pedals required) and I use literally EVERY button on the stick and throttle. I watched an interview with David Braben yesterday where he mentioned - this was news to me - that it's his favorite joystick to use. That might explain why the available E: D profile works so well right out of the box. It's literally plug and play.

I noticed that the joystick & throttle modeled in cockpit are pretty much a 1:1 copy of the x52 pro. I guess DB must really like it. :)

Thanks for the replies everyone. He'll definitely be under very close supervision while using it. :)

I must admit, the default X55 profile in ED leaves a lot to be desired. Only the very basic settings are programmed so it took a while to set up.

My daughter loved to fly airplanes in fighting simulators at a very young age - might also have been two at the time. They love seeing that they can use the joystick to affect what happens on the screen. :)

You should know that the precision slider on the x52 pro (and non-pro) throttle is very much rubbish. It's got quite a bit of jitter and is really only useful if you set it in band mode using the programming software. Good news is I can't really find a use for it in ED anyway lol. Maybe when we have manual zoom in cockpit I'll use it for something.
