Hardware & Technical Is this spec any good?

Hi Guys, would appreciate some input from some tech heads on here please ..looking at building a new PC as mine wont run VR or that other space game :D ..is this spec below good enough for a decent Elite VR experience and would it run SC to at a decent level? ..if not, what needs changing and is the price ok for the spec? ..thanks in advance for any advice given, looking at having Overclockers build it for me

AMD fan? Hehe.

Seems ok to me, little behind on some of the new AMD stuff.

Why only 1 stick of ram?
I might be old fashioned, but doesn't it run in dual channel with 2x8gb?

Also, when did you last use your dvd drive? :p

They're becoming rapidly obsolete. I've got one in my tower, but I don't actually have anything to put in it. Lol
Not even a windows dvd...!

(It's far quicker to install via USB now)

The premium for the 1800X over the 1800 may not really be worth it, but to each their own poison (I got the 1700X when that was the top model, so who am I to kinkshame…), I'd always use wired ethernet for a stationary machine (cutting the 15 quid WLAN part), and over 160 quid for a mainboard seems steep.

Thanks Cosmic, only getting the 1 stick of ram because £1500 is my budget at the minute and planning on adding another 16gb down the road to make it 32gb ...i also still watch and burn dvd's/cd's so that's why i want the drive LoL

Could i build a better VR PC for £1500??

My thoughts (YMMV):

1. RAM - Why skimp here as your system RAM will help performance more than you realize. My current Build has 64Gb of DDR4 and I wait for nothing
2. AMD RX580 - Save yourself the hassles here, I would go with at least a Vega 56 Card. I have the MSI Vega 56 OC Air Boost - for my spec I specifically wanted a blower tyle as I run an SFF case so I wanted the heat OUT of my case, but with a mid-tower you do have options
3. Network Adapter - Agree with above - wired is the best way to go with a stationary mid-tower
4. Optical Drive - Rather than sink this into the case itself, save the power draw as you can get some really decent DVD/Blu-Ray burners that are both external AND powered through the USB port. That is what I did with mine and I have never been happier.

And just so you have a comparison, here is the new PC I just built:

Shuttle SZ270R8 Chassis and Motherboard with ICE2 Heatpipe CPU Cooling, 500 watt PSU, SFF Case
512Gb Samsung 960 Pro NvM SSD (M2) - Boot drive
2TB Samsung 960 Pro NvM SSD (M2) - Data Drive
Intel Core i7-770K Quad Core CPU @ 4.2 Ghz
64Gb Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 2400 Dual Channel Kit (4 x 16Gb)
MSI Air Boost RX Vega 56 OC
Logitech Artemis 933 Wireless 7.1 Surround Headset
Built in 2x1Gigabit Ethernet (running paired for performance)
Extrnal Lightscribe Blu-Ray burner

As I said...I wait for nothing anymore...

Is there a reason why you are going for the 1800x instead of the 1600x? Personally I would go for the 1600x or even the non X. Much cheaper, put more money into a better GPU

Fair enough!

As far as RAM is concerned, if you've got 4 ram slots, i recommend you use 2x8gb, then add another 2x8gb later. I doubt 32gb will be needed for some time. (Others will argue of course. But i still use 8gb quite happily. Lol)
Not only do you gain dual channel doodah, you also have a fallback if a RAM module fails.

As far as VR is concerned, I can't really offer more advice, because I don't have a rig capable of it. Or a VR headset. Lol

Also, when it comes to choosing your RAM, make sure it'll fit under your CPU cooler.
I made that mistake. Lol

The 1800x, 1700x, and 1700 all dropped on the same day. I waited to see what the overclocking was going to look like, and one drop day, the 1800x and the 1700x were sold out pretty much everywhere. I got my 1700 as it's OC and temps put it right up there with the 1800X at almost $200 cheaper, and I didn't have to wait on back order.

Thanks guys for all the input, i've taken what you have all said on board and some good points was made so i've gone back to the drawing board and remember my budget is £1500 and this is what i'm thinking about now ..is this a better way to go?

Cost £1524

AWD Corsair 460X I7 7700K 4.8GHz Z270 GTX 1070 16GB Gaming PC Liquid Cooled

Corsair 2x 8gb ram 3200mhz DDR4

Samsung 500gb EVO SSD

Seagate 1TB Barracuda Drive

Windows 10 64gb

Asus 300mpbs wi-fi card

I know wired connection is better but need it to be wi-fi and will be adding a USB drive for DVD's etc ...could of made it better but limited by my budget, prices are crazy at the moment

What are you doing for a video card? You don't mention it in your current build

Never mind, I see GTX 1070, but is that onboard or separate card (just making sure as it affects RAM)

That looks pretty good. What the price of the i5 8600k (has six full cores but no hyperthreading) instead of an i7 7700K. Could be a cheaper solution. Maybe put that bit extra towards a better GPU.

this, this,a nd this again.

I'd go as far as to say that *any* network connected device that does not move around, should be wired in.

Z...

Sometimes you wonder...
