I wonder what happens when you start picking things up and putting them back on the wrong shelf? Or just sliding them all along the shelf a bit to get at something behind? Maybe picking up a lot of different things, putting them in your bag and then leaving them all on another shelf entirely? At exactly what point does the computer just lose track, spit out it's dummy and turn off the lights? [blah]
 
The shop is meant to have specific places for everything, such as indentations or slots for items to fit in. Unless you're willing to drop things in the floor, the easiest place to return an item is where you found it.

As noted on Ars Technica, this system only works for very uniformly shaped and colored items. Couldn't work for clothing, for example.
