Well, some of the new "scatter" rocks are rather huge, and could probably mimick a lot of the sharp-edged and cracked features in the other pictures - at least short range.

Maybe we'll see the "frozen over lakes" in a later update. There were of course smaller ice boulders already in Horizons - don't know whether their parallax effect was a shader trick, or the modellers did the inner-and-outer-shell thing with those... :7
 
It also doesn't look like the in game screenshots that have been shown very recently either.
This is true though, and valid.

Especially for me as the game is permanently in some kind of low/medium LOD for everything, while still running like a snail that was burnt to death a hundred years ago
 
Forget the top left and bottom image. They are concept art and you'll never see graphics like that in an open-world procedurely generated game, well not for years anyway, and not with ED's current engine.

I don't see why we can't have proper transparency effects though like the top right video screen.
We had transparency effects in Horizons, but Frontier removed it in Odyssey. As you can see, the ice is lit differently than would regular rocks.

In fact here after the sun set, the ice was still glowing a brilliant turquoise and it was just an absolute miracle to watch.

Maybe they'll add it later. I don't like the ice worlds we have in Odyssey.
