Is VR finally implemented in Odyssey?

Hello,

Could you please advise if VR mode is finally implemented/fixed in Odyssey? I stopped playing Elite when the Odyssey came out without VR support. How much it has changed from that time? Is VR finally properly supported in Odyssey? I would like to come back to this game... but I can't play it without VR :(

Regards!

EDO came out with the same VR support as Horizons. Performance on release was abysmal, but still playable with good hardware.
Much better performance now, but the implementation remains the same - with a comment from Arf many moons ago that there would be no further VR development on EDO - so no first person meandering on foot expected to arrive.

I disagree with the first sentence - we had 100% of the game in VR, now it is less, and we never got the "just take of the headset and play on screen" alternative that was talked about before EDO launch. It doesn't help that I need to recenter the view anytime it switches between VR and virtual screen. It means I need to decide before I boot up the game which gameplay I will spend most of my time, and this leads unfortunately often to me playing other games lately.

For me personally the virtual screen is combining the worst parts of VR and flatscreen mode - still gotta wear the headset, still somewhat lower resolution, no depth and huge areas with no image. Oh, and just forget about good screenshots.

The performance is much better and definitely playable in VR now (unless one of the fire shaders crashes or whatever causes the rare down to 6 FPS drops). On foot in VR also looks gorgeous in the external camera. Just not the gameplay part.

VR is still niche
And a niche feature in niche game is not going to have any sort of meaningful return of investment.

Ubisoft tried with Assassins Creed and they recently stated the sales were disappointing and they will not invest more in this

This Cmdr has posted to the Steam forums with his chosen method of playing the on-foot portion in VR. (attach the external camera to your character's face)

It's not perfect, but he does on-foot combat in that mode too.

Looks like you are forced to use motion controllers + standing VR exclusive? It is no surprise it failed. All games like that will fail and will continue to fail. Nobody wants to stand around flailing their arms for hours.

FDev NEEDS to finish VR on foot. They are probably 95% of the way there already with most menu interactions being on a screen in the 3d environment already. For them I think it would be a worthwhile investment since they make their money from NEW sales. Having that feature would get them NEW sales. It doesn't matter that only a few VR diehards will actually use it extensively. It would get them more sales.

As always I point to Proton War as an (the only) example of seated VR FPS done right. Mouselook in VR is amazing!

Anti alias in ODY is very bad compared to Horizons.
In Ody you get flickering shadows in horizons you dont.
Performance is about double in Horizons compared to Ody. (overall)

I use a 4070ti and a Quest 2
In Ody I will struggle to get 30+ when in populated areas and you can feel the fps lagging.
In Horizons I get a smooth 70+ in populated areas with good anti alias and no flickering shadows.

Still playable in ODY but Much more enjoyable in Horizons. (VR)
For 2D Ody is Great. (I play on 3440x1440 so It hides some of the bad alias stuff in 2D :) )

Not so much these days. PC VR is still niche, but I know lots of people that have some form of none-PC VR (e.g. Quest 3). I know very few people that have PC VR, though (so no incentive for more development on EDO really...).

Compared with the non-vr market, the vr gaming market is really niche 🤷‍♂️
If it wasnt, i would be the one begging fdev to make a non-vr odyssey

Anyway, they have the exact numbers of ED VR players... and they decided not to invest more in VR in ED - this should speak volumes, more than anything else.

Though yer a Celeron with a 4090 would be funny :)
I'd hoped you'd see the humour!

I was curious, is all - EDO is single thread heavy (according to some research done by Morbad - I have no reason to doubt him!) especially in comparison to Legacy Horizons.
