Issue with accuracy of Primary Weapon

So I've just started playing and jumped straight into the basic mission of shooting up all the cargo floating around.

I had one in my sights and fired at it for ages and nothing was happening. Tried another and same thing.

By accident I strafed left then suddenly it started hitting the canister ... when it was about 4-5 centimetres away from my sights.

This doesn't sound right - is there any kind of calibration thing going on here does anyone know?

Regards,

If you are very close to the canister and the weapons are on your wing tips then you will probably fire either side of the target. For a large target, like a ship it doesn't matter, only something small. At range it also probably wouldn't happen because the weapons are angled in slightly to converge.

If you are close then try moving backwards. Again it won't matter in combat because the target is far larger. Hope that helps.

If you look carefully, you'll see 2 circles that indicate where the line of fire of each cannon is going. At close range those are separate, you have to aim one or the other cannon at the canister. I assume there is some convergence at range.

you need to lock the target,i have a button on my xbox360 controller mapped for "lock".
the "T" key on your keyboard is your lock target key, press this & your weapons system should lock onto the target.

It's called weapon convergence.
For example: Put your arms out to the sides so you're a big T shape.
Use your index fingers to point ahead of you.
You can move your wrists and hands and index fingers so they can point to most places around you but now try and point at your nose.
You can't.
Unless you have extra flexible joints of course.
Your fingers can only point to things that are at least a little distance from your nose.
Same for your weapons.

Back up your ship a little, say 50m, and you'll find you can hit the targets easily.
