Newcomer / Intro Issue with mining - mining laser not firing

Hi there, relatively new to the game, but I have an issue I can't seem to get around.
I managed to get me a Cobra MkIII.
I added a refinery and still have 32T of cargo space.
I bought the mining lasers.
Made sure the refinery is powered.
Added the mining laser to a weapon group.

When I get close to an asteroid and my mining lasers go from red to yellow, so in range, I can't fire them.....
When I switch to normal weapons they fire.

No idea what I am doing wrong here.
At the moment I'm stuck as to how to get this working.
Any ideas?

Cheers,
Puc.

You have to cycle between weapon groups to select the correct lasers.
sounds like your normal weapons are in group 1 and your mining lasers are in group 2.

Yeah, I have the mining laser in group 4 separately. Normal weapons in group 1. Scanners in group 2 and 3.
So I cycle to group 4 and see only mining laser in the HUD as active and deployed, it just won't fire.
tried changing to button 1 and 2 but no luck.

Thx for the answer though.

Cheers,
Puc.

I indeed now notice a turret icon above the mining laser which I don't see in the training mission....
Just went and tried the training mission again which worked fine.
So need to figure out how to operate this in turret mode and how to activate that ;-)
Guess I was too fast in picking the mining laser and didn't pay attention to that detail.

Thanks for the help.
So much more to learn ;-)

Cheers,
Puc.

Just another note on mining lasers, you have to be what I consider uncomfortably close to use them. I usually turn on my exterior lights to use as a guide.

It's in the very right tab in the right panel.

You can go with fixed lasers next time. The turrets are just for the gunner role really.

This is why many guides say look at the rock and then manoeuvre to approach along its spin axis, so that when your lasers are in range you are less likely to get clobbered by a sticky out bit.
