Issues since getting Elite

Hi Commanders,

I got this game as a 47th birthday present from my wife after I gave numerous "obvious" hints that this was the only thing I wanted. This is now causing me problems and dilemnas I did not have pre Elite.

You see, I have a demanding and time consuming job to help support my family, which includes two teenage boys. That time could be better spent mining, trading, exploring the Milky Way and then fighting when I get the right ship and upgrades. When the boys are on the PC I am thinking of ways of getting them off so I can get on, such as creating new chores for them and reminding them they need to do more homework. Am I a bad dad for trying to boot them off the PC?

I love the sandbox element of the game and am trying to find a pristine belt to mine the good stuff. Just searching for a system and doing some exploration on the way just fills me with delight. But the big problem is I know I can sink so much more time and easily immerse myself for days on end, but this is not possible. For that reason I damn you FD for making this an incredible experience for me. Especially as we all know this game will develop beyond recognition in the following years.

This game is on my list of things to do when I retire and am now striving to retire earlier for this reason.

I recently bought a FPS just because I wanted to shoot things and hated being led from from one place to the next. Give me sandbox any day.

One final note is there any other middle age Commanders out there who wish to join up in game for little spare time they have?

Signing off
Baron Zinq

The only option would be to buy your lads a laptop, maybe they can get the game too and you can play together?

Try to do what my dad did to me and my brothers at the time of original Elite. He threatened us that if we couldn't write a simple program within a few months then the Acorn Electron was getting sold...

(All worked out fine in the end, he just wanted it to himself too :p )

I feel your pain Mr Zinq. I'm 39 and have two much younger, but equally demanding, sons (one's nearly 4 and the other's 7 months). What little time I have left after work is taken up with family and other household duties. In my twenties I often used to game for 6+ hours on the trot at weekends, but now I barely average an hour a week of gaming.

This game is so good though, that we're just going to have to make time for it, and even more so once the planetary landings expansion is released. If my marriage falls apart I shall lay the blame squarely at Frontier's door ;)

Funny you should say that, I ordered a entry level gaming laptop for my youngest (13 year old) last week. So that will be one down. The biggest issue is this work thing getting in the way :)
