Issues to be solved with PC/console players playing together

Disclaimer: let's first get out this - I like idea of console ED. I am not fully decided on us playing together, but I would personally wouldn't mind and would even welcome such scenario - if certain issues are solved.

1. I guess numerous people already have pointed this out - how will release schedule will change, if console and PC versions are able to play together? Do FD expect networking and other aspects to be stable around XBO release so later PC version can be patched seperately and it would still working together with XBO client? I guess if FD decides against allowing playing together (only galaxy influence) it's not that big deal; I guess this is also major reason they can't tell us yet;
2. FD will really need to up their game regarding reporting cheaters/griefers support. If we will play together, I expect quite a few trolls and griefers aiming at console players (and vice versa). At this point we have few accidents which are more bad taste of fun than toxic behavior. This will change very fast - and again, not only because console players, but PC players attitude towards them;
3. I guess some additional explanation how expansions will work in context of consoles wouldn't hurt. It is bit related to first question - how upgrades will be rolled out to consoles and all small details;

Let's have constructive discussion shall we :)

Console players are not up to the task. They wont like the fact there is nobody to hold their hand, irrespective of networking issues. The forum will become intersting, as you state with greifers and trolls. Instead of Empire versus Federation it wil become PC versus console, lol.

PC and Console players in the same game works nicely in say War Thunder. So from a performance and control PoV there is nothing stopping PC, Mac and Xbox players mingling together. The big spanner in the wheels may be Microsoft demanding full control of player-account, server connectivity and P2P instancing where Xbox players are concerned.

War Thunder have some similar issue, in so far as Sony demand full control of player-account, so PS4 players can't use the same WT player account if later migrating to PC, or vice-versa.

I'd almost assume that for the PC master-race and Xbox minions to get to actually play together, FD/ED would have to have their own instancing servers rather than P2P - to quell any MS security concerns.

I'll be interested to see how MS will react to P2P networking. As far as I'm aware that's a big no no with them.
Perhaps this might be a route away from P2P and towards proper server based networking.

Judging by the posts made by the devs in the announcement thread, it seems that we won't be meeting console players. They will just affect the galaxy simulation.

Much like how Solo mode works to Open. Community goals/ markets etc will be shared. But we won't see them

Do we have FDEV confirmation thatr console players will be able to play with PC players in the same instance etc? As far as I read it it was just the background sim data that will be shared no?

The console gamers experience will be ruined by lots of middle-aged men yelling at them for not observing the green lights on station entrances, and why don't they get a haircut, stop fooling around and get a proper job and call that music, it's just noise, in my day we flew slowly and steadily, so what if you can enter the station with boost on, experience is the important thing, no respect these days etc...

Yes, read the original David Braben thread announcing it. Console and PC will not mix together.

FYI Xbox games have used P2P for years... it's the primary model used on that platform in multiplayer games, e.g. check Halo. It reduces the server expense.

The FPS shooters I've played over the years have sometimes experimented with mixing console and PC players, but the console players get totally pwned so it's not mainstream.

FD have a significant (to them) relationship with Microsoft, so an Xbox port shouldn't be a surprise (Ann Report 2014):
We also signed an agreement to undertake additional workunder an existing development agreement with Microsoft.The contract amendment has a value of US$1.75 million,bringing the total contract value to US$5.67 million.The additional amount will be earned and recognisedover development milestones spanning the financial yearsending 31 May 2014 and 31 May 2015. In the year to31 May 2014 US$2.1 million of revenue was recognised.

Console games do tend to imply crappy menu systems on PC's, like the truly dire weapons buy menu on CS:GO but FD have done pretty well with the ED UI so far...

I’m also pleased to announce PC, Mac and Xbox One players will all share the same overarching narrative and galaxy state. That means even more players contributing to the wars, power struggles and Community Goals across the galaxy.

David doesn't say that they will be in the same instance, just that they will share the same galaxy state. I get the feeling that it will be like there is the PC/Mac group and XBO group. While they may affect each other indirectly they will never meet in the flesh.

I said "read the original David Braben thread," not "read David Brabens post. It's in there, but you actually have to scroll down a ways.

Xbox players will have their own default "all" group, which will be separate from the pc's "all" group.
A p2p network suddenly doesn't seem like such a bad idea in terms of people exploiting its weaknesses when everyone is playing on a tightly locked down platform ;)

If console and PC gamers are thrown in the same universe it will be the end of the "solo vs groups vs open" and "carebears vs griefers" fights!
All PC gamers will unite against their common foe in a GALAXY WIDE WAR!

Or maybe not... hehehe

I would gladly kill every console player I see.

All sounds unnecessarily platformist to me. Are you going to pick on Mac users just for being on an Apple system when they join the game?
