Issues with HTC VIVE and Mapping routes in Galaxy map

Hi All,

I tried searching through the posts but to no avail.

Does anyone else find that selecting a star in the Galaxy window is almost impossible in the HTC VIVE? Or am I doing something completely wrong?

Please help :)

Thanks in advance!

Yup. Galaxy map is messed up on the Vive; I've had to resort to shifting over to the left and typing in the name of the system. Usually though I tend to pick up mission objectives and use the UI in the cockpit to bring up the galaxy map with the destination preselected, saving me the hassle of dealing with it!

That sucks!! Especially if you are exploring!!!

Well at least now I know that this is a known issue, thanks Filmgeek47.

No, and in fact I find it easier than ever, because the star field is spread out before me. My only complaint is that the galaxy map starts "edge on" rather than at an angle.

Are you trying to use the mouse, rather than use your HOTAS?

Because I've been using my HOTAS since private beta, so it could be that I haven't had to learn a new skill. If you're used to the mouse, the trick is that the targeting reticle is in the XY plane, and to select a star, you have to select to star's location on that same plane. You can find it by following the star's "z" axis (the light blue line) up or down to a circle on the plane. Put the reticle on the circle and the star is selected.

Put simply the mouse is best at selecting objects in a 2D space. It gets goofy right quick in a 3D space.

Its taken a good chunk of time for me to acclimate to the maps in VR. I absolutely do think some work is needed, though at the moment it is passable.

I rely heavily on search to target a system in the galaxy map. Then the mouse works ok to select the plot route icon. For the system map I tend to use the HOTAS for moving around. Though it is far slower, at least for me, than it was before with the mouse. I still find it quirky to target a station within the system map. The mouse again has issues selecting things in a 3D space.

Yes I was trying to use the mouse its next to impossible :), I'll try changing how my HOTAS is configured perhaps so I can make selections, cheers for the tip.

Yeah mouse is a nono, I'll try following Darkfyre99's instructions and see how I go....thanks

When exploring I find it easier to go back to monitor. Selecting a star 750-800LY away (without typing in FORDE-12C-A51CD-C12 or some such blindly) does not work for me.

I go back to 2D and play without the Vive on that account. It's a PIA. but the only viable solution for me so far.

This is what I posted in a reddit thread on the subject:

1) Remapped UI functions to: LEFT/RIGHT Q/E (from A/D); TABLEFT/RIGHT A/D (from Q/E). This means some adjustment when operating the in-ship panels, but makes Galaxy/Star map much more intuitive.

2) Use mouse pan/zoom/rotate as you suggested, and WASD for forward/backwards strafe left/right (feels much more intuitive this way for experienced WASD users), and Q/E for moving UI left/right to select 'route' etc on the individual star systems.

I think part of what makes the GM confusing for VR users is the initial assumption is 'I have something set up wrong because there's no way this is how it's supposed to work'. At least, that's what I assumed. I thought I had accidentally messed up an important UI setting in the graphics menu or something.

That said, I believe that have fixed the issue of the mouse removing selection of a system. So you just have to tap the keyboard to get a system 'selected' and then you should be able to select stuff normally.

I missed this thread. Here is my experience with the galaxy map in 2.1:

  • I accepted a mission, launched, looked to my left, selected the mission info and the "go to galaxy map" button. Nothing happens.
  • I open the galaxy map manually, and the destionation is selected. I manage to choose to plot navigation, but a path cannot be found.
  • After having purchased a new frame shift drive, yet gettin the same message, I finally start using the mouse in the map to look around with. It looks as if I can jump to two other systems to get closer, so I try that. And now, finally, I can reach my destination. Why wasn't the map able to plot this for me?
  • The mouse cursor is a pain to use. I can only rotate with it, not actually select anything. It does select... somtimes... but never what I'm looking at (have to close one of my eyes to aim it too).

Shouldn't I be able to use my joystick hat switch to jump between systems, and perhaps the joystick itself to rotate my view?

Check the video in that post for how to work with the galaxy map in VR with HOTAS:

It's quite old but still valid.

And to repeat the often mentioned rule no. 1 for using the Galaxy Map in VR: DON'T USE THE MOUSE! AT ALL! It's useless for selecting stuff in a 3D environment! Move the mouse cursor out of sight and use your Joystick / HOTAS with the circular marker to select things as shown in the linked video.

Yosharian and Darkfyre and the vid fron Khaldar offer some good tips, I eventually also figured out and dont have too many issues.

I still use the mouse to rotate the galaxy map, and use the roller to zoom in and out. I found that you cant select stars from far away (which is what I was trying to do initially, old habit from the 2D days), instead you need to be reasonably zoomed in to be able to see the star selection reticule (use the HOTAS to move side to side, up and down etc) and then the rest is history...

That is my video. The biggest problem is that people are trying to navigate the map using a mouse pointer that it is not on the same plane as the stars that are trying to select.. use a controller or a HOTAS and it becomes super easy to select anything.

Do I need to make a more up-to-date version with the new features?

I'm stumped. Super-stumped. I can't select stars. I'm fine touchtyping names most of the time, but I can't Select the darn star to Route to it! Am I being shockingly dense? I had to go into the graphics options and set "Render windows cursor" to on in order to see a pointer in the first place. I'm in the galmap, hovering my pointer over a looked-up star, front and centre. Click does nothing. I double-clicked randomly a few times and zoomed over to another star lightyears away.

I'm goin' nuts. Is there ANY non-mousebutton command for selecting stars in the galmap? My Asp looks better through the Vive than ever before, but I'm stuck in my own backyard.

To fix this, just turn on SHOW GRID on galaxy map option tab (the one on the right side). This stumped me for AGES. Now you can use mouse, keyboard or joystick to select stars !

Got my shiny new Vive while en route to Beagle...played with it for a couple hours and just took it off and went back to my tri-monitor setup...the map interface was just too terrible to tolerate.
