Newcomer / Intro It is lonely in space....

Hello everyone, new player here.
Started a couple of days ago.
Watched a few youtube videos on how to make credits in game; pew pewed a bunch of bad guys being shot at by the popos to make enough for a Hauler.
Then upgraded some stuff to increase travel limits, and now scanning some planets/systems/etc.
The videos said, scanning these far out thing would pay half mill, or at least a couple hundred thousand each.
My question is if the selling price for "Universal Cartographics" is different, more or less, in different systems. I am selling info anywhere where I see a station, cause I would lose that info if I get destroyed right?
I started at DROMI? and now at HR 8482.
I have made about 11 mills so far.
Is that good, or should I be selling the carto info to the starting / well established? systems.
Thanks

I believe the general idea is to sell your data as far away as possible, but I never checked if there is a dropoff point. It's just one of the things that factor in how much you get paid though.

AFAIK the only thing that really adds a multiplier to how much you get paid for exploration data is backing Li-Yong Rui in power play. It's a lot of work without help of a group though and chances are you are going to die and lose your data before you manage to prime him for maximum payout.

If I can give you one piece of advice, the longer you play, the more you find the value of money decreasing. I say focus less on where the big payouts are and more on where you find enjoyment. The money will work itself out one way or the other, it always does.

1. On not moving stations you can sell data at least 20ly away. Close will not be sold.
2. On carrier you can sell any data, however carrier will cut 25%.

Price depends on scan data. Each planet type has own price. Most expensive are water/tera/earth like.
There are 2 prices - for FSS scan and for DSS scan (close scan of surface).
If happens you're 1st found this body (i.e. no other player named on it) you will get x5 bonus. So if you found complete new then FSS will do x5 and DSS will do x5.
This way if you got system with 4-5 planets like Earth and scanned it - you will have 20 mils +/- just from 1 system.

As mentioned already - there is no change in value according to distance, the only distance involved being the need to be over 20Ly from the system scanned. Also as mentioned value depends upon whether you have just discovered or if you have also mapped (using the DSS) - there is another tier of values if you are first to discover or first to map. There is also a bonus for completely scanning (FSS) a system and another for mapping all bodies in a system.

Here is a graphic showing the current estimated values for each body:

It is large so "save image as" or "view image" (after clicking on it) to get the full resolution

have fun

Welcome to the Elite Galaxy commander!

You've probably already found most the resources listed below but have a look and don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them on video, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

Once you get 50-100M you can get a ship good enough for the more profitable methods of credit crunching. Run you road to riches in a stripped out Hauler to get max range for min outlay.

Welcome to the world of Elite.
In terms of progresion / earnings potential, it is really hard to say where you should be this far into your time on Elite because so many things have changed since most of us were where you are.
When I was learning the ropes, I followed Masarks guide to trade sidewinder to Anaconda

It was a good structure to get you to experience most of the original ships and most of the game mechanics.
Understandably for a guide that is three years out of date, it doesn't include things like engineers, guardians, Thargoids or the new mining but it is a good starting place.

Universal Cartographics can't be sold locally but dont change in value once you can cash them in.
Rare Goods trading is the reverse. The value of the resell increases the further away from source, upto a maximum value at 200ly from source.
I also kept old ships when 'upgrading' so that I could go back quickly if I wanted to. There are a couple of bespoke choices in the mid ship area. For instance - you might buy a mid-sized cargo hauler and then want to do a bit of combat.

Other Hints & Tips -
  • Never fly without rebuy
  • Learn KGBFOAM
  • use third party sites like Inara, EDDB and EDSM
  • (I found the Road to RIches to be mind-numbingly boring - there are more interesting ways to earn money.)

(Also I'll let you find out about Hutton Orbital)
