The hardest thing is the amount of time you give someone to drop their cargo. If you give them longer than say ten seconds they can sometimes get a jump off and warp away while you're patiently waiting for them to roll over and drop cargo. That's why I usually message them and fire off a few warning cannon rounds into their belly to let them know I mean business.
I dont think many people are up to using the coms system, or even know how it works, so that could be a bit of an issue.
If someone were to contact me with a 'stand and deliver' request, firstly it might take me a few seconds to even notice (a nice clear 'beep' would be nice).
Second I would have to then target the pirate so that I could actually communicate with him (or her). This could take several seconds (for me) if local space is busy. Be nice to be able to do some kind of insta-reply.
And then I actually have to take my hands OFF the HOTAS to use a typewriter - and as I may be using both hands to, for example, shift to reverse whilst applying downward thrust whilst pulling hard back on the stick to pull the nose up to potentially introduce the pirate to both sets of rocket launchers, this may not be easy. (Though I wondering if it is physically possible to bring the nose around on a Viper thats right up your, err, back, at least quickly enough to employ the missiles before his canon tear me apart).
All in all I dont think many people are going to be replying to the 'gimme your goodies or else' but I think to a large extent its a comms issue that will be sorted in due course.
As to what I will do next time I am accosted by one of these bandits, I am not sure. Partly it will depend on the cargo I am carrying. This time it was fish so I didnt care, resonating seperators would have hurt a bit. Partly it will depend on whether I am asked nicely or not (politeness never hurts), but mainly it will depend on what mood I am in...
By the way..does speech to text work in ED?
I have voice attack but havent configured it yet. Can I get voice attack to deliver a pre-written typed response? That would be great. Then I could deliver a 'typed' line in comms like 'It is with great regret that after due consideration we feel unable to comply with your kind request at this time' by simply saying two words into the microphone, the second of these words being '....you!'
