It should cost credits to store stuff

They were going to originally, idea got shelved after after many people squawking (as opposed to some people squawking many times). May be instituted at later time.

Yeah makes sense modules and ships. Even a docking fee, price dependant in size of pad.

Rate per item per day

It would have to be based on game time, rather than real time, or people who stop playing for a while would come back to a massive bill.

Easy enough to manage. Commander pays standard rate per realtime day. One month after last login, converts to a much lower "long term storage" rate.

Would need balancing, but a certain amount per ton of ship in storage, flat rate per module based on module class (maybe extra for guardian, engineered or experimental modules).

Would just add to the runnning costs of your fleet and you'd need to make a certain amount of income ongoing to support your storage habits.

Well, they do this in other Games when you Buy a mansion or house and with credits being so easy to make why not?

To an extent they do. In LOTRO for instance if you don't pay for the house you lose the house, but all the stuff in the house gets put into escrow for you to collect when you come back, so you lose nothing essentially. Also the amount it costs to buy a house is quite close to nothing in in-game currency, so essentially you lose nothing if you leave the game for a long time and come back to it, it doesn't matter how long you stay away.

A continuing endless charge is something else, so I would disagree. Maybe they could have a one off fee, say you automatically free landing and docking for one ship for however long you want to be there, but if you store a ship or modules you essentially pay a purchase fee for a warehouse to store ships and modules. Having a continuing charge sounds to much like a money sink, and a game without a player driven market just doesn't need those.

I think it should be free to a point (120 items), and then blocks of 50 cost more. But rather than have a flat fee, the cost is added to any transfers you do.

I have an Imperial Cutter (190m x 110m x 30m) sitting in storage somewhere in the galaxy not to mention my 5 or so other ships, and 40 odd modules. Why doesn't that cost me anything?

No.
It's a game with no subscription and no hidden maintenance costs.
You can play it on and off without fearing that you may lose your ships or your achievements during your absence

Yup, it's not FTP and so you're not getting any benefits for logging in each day - at least until today... - and you also don't lose anything.

So please no storage fee

I'd pay credits for additional module storage.
And I wouldn't be against a one off ship storage fee.
But not modules, because refitting your ship can require placing modules in storage, while you rejig things, then bring them back. It'll basically become outfitting tax. Lol

The problem with fees like this is that they're either trivial - 10 credits a module a day, or something, so even if you leave a full module storage alone for a year you're only down a few million - and therefore not really worth implementing ... or they're substantial enough to be noticeable and therefore don't fit well with the wide variety of earning rates out there. A million a day in storage fees would be mildly inconvenient to me, absolutely nothing to a core miner, and a serious challenge for semi-casual players.

They also wouldn't fit well with exploration - if someone goes on a six month trip, they're logging in every day (so they don't get any cheaper/no rates for that), and they're doing stuff which will at some future point earn money, but unlike the other professions that money isn't going steadily onto their balance - it all goes on at the final sale.

I could see higher storage fees that decrease as you gain favor with the faction that runs the station. Once allied, then there would be no fees for these things. This would make BGS a bit more interesting as well, because if another faction takes over and you get a surprise storage bill, then you'll take notice!

I'm not sure about docking fees. The gas station / restaurant / Walmart doesn't charge me to park in their lot because they know I'm there to purchase their goods.

It's not really sitting in storage though.

The 3D blueprint exists in the station's database that can re-constitute your ship & modules when you request it. When you "store" your ship or module, it's dismantled at the atomic level and the materials used by the station. Otherwise, it doesn't exist. 🤷‍♀️

But yes, it should cost to store & dock.
