It took awhile for us old folks

I started playing computer games back in the days of Zork, Pong, Magnavox, Com64, and all the old greats. I thought the days of pc games Elite, Wing Commander and Descent were gone forever. I'm glad I have lived long enough to see all three come back strong. I played the beta of Descent Underground today and it was amazing. They stayed true to the original game. It's as if they took the original and upped the graphics to today standards. It plays just like the original in every way. The jury is still out on Star Citizen but the latest beta 2.0 is looking pretty good. I have a lot better luck playing it now. I can even kill a few Kilirathi now. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Elite Dangerous has stayed a pretty true to the original and has added a lot more content.
I guess all I really want to say is thank you to all of these developers for bringing my old games back. I thought with all the COD, WOW, EVE, GTA, etc young folk games, we would never get these old folk games back.

All us kids who grew up playing those games are making them now. We played these games when we were kids and they sparked our imaginations - fueling ideas we carried into our adult lives and eventually into our careers (those of us who went into the game development industry that is). This is how remakes should be done. It's nice to see that happening again.

Don't count your saber blades yet here.

I think most people fail to realize that all the 'old' games where by nature not Open/PvP, and the joy and time was from the Game, not random social chat/deathmatch.
The true revival may yet come, but it's not here yet.

What's needed is an Open environment that works for Groups, but is based on a solid Solo game. This does not mean the impossible, but very challenging still. No matter what age it is.

I was born in 1960, so I was privileged to witness the birth & development of gaming systems, both for the home & in pubs, then home computers & video games.
Iv played the lot...from the pub machine games like 'Pong' & Space Invaders', 'Galaxian' & other similar type games of the late '70s early '80s. Also having a couple of early 'gaming systems' to connect to the TV.

Buying my first home computer, in the early '80s, a Commodore 64. I recall a workmate telling me of this brilliant game that he'd got for his BBC Basic computer called Elite. He remarked how excellent the game had been put together & recommended it as a good buy. So I managed to buy it & I was hooked & played it to death.

As the '80s & '90s drifted by, home computers came & went. I moved on updating my computer as technology & more important memory size increased. My C64 became an Atari ST, then an Amiga 500, before buying my first PC from the now defunct 'Tiny'.

I played all the classics back then, particularly on the PC - First Encounters, C&C, Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, UFO, the X series & enjoyed them all at the time.

Slowly though as time passed by my enthusiasm waned for this type of pewpew gamestyle & the games market was a SELL, SELL, SELL, KILL, KILL, KILL industry that I grew out of.

Until Elite Dangerous, I hadn't bought a PC game since X3, I'd been playing a few of the free online games, one was called 'ogame' - a text type space game of building up your empire & space fleet & going out attacking other online players - no action, you just gave your fleet instructions & the maths (yes Im British) maths did the rest.
Even this was getting boring.

Then, due to illness in the fall of 2013 & since, I found myself at home all the time & was trying to find something to keep me occupied. Just before the release of ED in 2014, I happened to think of seeing if I could get the old Elite downloaded on my laptop & started searching the net only to find that ED was due to be launched.
Iv been playing it almost every day since & enjoy Horizons too.

Well done FD, it's just a pity that I only got wind of ED just before release or I'd have been a kickstarter for sure. It's a great game, it may have it's knockers, including me sometimes - but only cos Im not into the excitement of pewpew dogfighting anymore. But I can load up & relax for a few hours doing what I want to do in the game.

+ Rep OP, for trip down memory lane.

Wot, no mention of Defender a truly Darwinian Game that changed evolution forcing players to develop their third arm.

Hmm, that sentence could be misconstrued so just let’s overlook that…
