It turned into a lot more than scanning wakes...

Today I had a pretty awesome time. It began as needing to scan some wakes to get DWE's for upgrading some of my ships with those new FSD's. I normally scan wakes using the FSWS on my Ody mission runner (a Dolphin). I'll just scan any wakes I see when leaving stations while doing Ody missions. But today was different. I was already in a ship that had a FSWS, my pirate python: "Jack O' Diamonds", named for all the Low Temp Diamonds it obtained from others back in the day. Anyway, I had just completed a session of liberating unneeded goods from rich ship-owners to donate to a worthy cause, or something like that, but I digress. It started out as a normal wake scanning session outside my home station, but since my Ody mission runner is not set up for combat I never previously considered doing anything else in parallel. But today, I realized that I could accomplish many things simultaneously in my pirate ship:

  • scan wakes,
  • scan wanted NPC's for other engineering mats, then kill them and scoop up their engineering mats and escape pods, and get their bounties,
  • scan CLEAN NPC's aligned to enemy powers for more engineering mats, then kill them and scoop up their engineering mats, and escape pods AND gain merits,
  • basically act as a 1-man station patrol, making sure that no unwanted NPC's made it into the station.
  • because of high traffic at this station, there was non-stop action.

Because of the new PP 2.0 rules, the gameplay above gave me no notoriety, and no bounties. I just ended up at the end with a 2900 credit fine, which is nothing, due to firing my weapons in the station's no-fire zone. This automatically tallied up my PP kills at 29 for that session because each infraction only costs 100 credits.

This is my new way of scanning wakes from now on. NONE SHALL PASS.
 
Sounds like a great time, and a good example of the emergent gameplay E:D is so good at! I’m just getting starting with Odyssey and am looking for a decent ship to use when looking for mats. Could you explain your mission running Dolphin a little, what sort of modules you’re using and why, that sort of thing? And this Python build sounds fun, too!

I have one already but it’s fitted for mining, as I used it to make bank in the LTD boom a few years back.

That's great but how many DWE's did you get 9? Go to the crashed Anaconda and make 4 runs to the broker then get all 6 SCO's

Small enough to land next to Exo biological sites
Decent shields that will survive a full speed face plant
2x SRV’s to support Ody missions including loss of 1 without returning to base
FSWS as discussed
Point defense on top mount to support work at Guardian sites and in Thargoid surface sites including power restoration missions at Revenant infested settlements
Other internals engineered to support these purposes




* I made this ship when there were still burning stations. The HSL was installed so that this ship could loiter for long periods inside those burning stations and use the collector limpet to farm the materials inside. That was the only environment that would cause this ship to over heat.

Yeah, I didn’t count how many, but I normally just scan a wake when I see one and continue what I was doing. Then trade up whenever I happen to be at a station with an encoded mat trader. If you want to grind them then Jameson’s crash site is better and faster, then trade for DWE’s.

So there's a piece here where there's a great art in building multipurpose ships. It's very easy to get in the habit as many do of building single-purpose, min-maxed ships[1]...my mission-runner is a jack of all trades[1]... the only thing it can't do are Wing Assassinations, Mining Missions, Passenger Missions and (stacked) trade missions. It's built very particularly for general-case mission boards so it can take as many different activity types as possible.

This means fittings aim for min-ing only. Like... my battleconda which I use exclusively for massacre stacking and CZs, sure, it could slam wing assassinations no problems. But 99% of the time there's only one or two, where it actually can't take more than one salvage mission because it's got like, 4t of cargo (for reasons). But my mission ship... if my shields aren't almost down, or I haven't taken 5% hull damage after a standard assassination, I have too many SCBs or my Shield Generator could go down a class or two. Everything should be just enough to get through.

I guess in a way it's still a min-max build, but for diversity of activity.

[1] Which is an aspect I've always disliked about the game, as the activities aren't structured in a way that properly incentivises multi-role ships by making activities multi-role. . Don't get me wrong, there's a time and place for single-purpose ships, but that should be niche use-cases like the example I gave of only winning CZs or doing massacre stacks. Looking at both combat and exploration in particular here, though the shieldless hauler builds also make me twitch.
 
True. And I agree wholeheartedly. I guess my Dolphin above is really used as a multipurpose ship.

As previously discussed, here are 3 of my ships.


Jack o' Diamonds, as requested above. It's basically original except for the Guardian FSD booster and recently upgraded SCO FSD. Built in 2017 I believe.










Gentle Ben was my first Python and is multi purpose, was made in early 2017 I believe. I started playing ED just after Horizons was released, and this ship took me a LONG time in the old days to be able to afford, including a couple of rebuys. I use this ship all the time for random things and general mission running. This build is basically the original with 3 "recent" changes. Added the Guardian FSD booster when those came out, I replaced the collector limpet controller with an Operations Multi Limpet controller when that was released (only for being able to launch 4 collector limpets from a C3 slot), upgraded to the Sirius HSL, and of course, upgraded the FSD to the latest SCO version.








Jack of All Trades started out as a joke to see how many capabilities I could put into an Anaconda. Built in 2018 I believe and I still use it from time to time, but truthfully, even though it's like a Swiss Army Knife, it really doesn't do anything above average. The only "recent" upgrades are the Guardian FSD booster and the SCO FSD when those came out.





As a side note, as you can see, these are all PVE ships, and I will use an advanced docking computer on ships that won't normally see PVP combat and I can spare the slot. I use time during docking/undocking with these to do other things such as use 3rd party tools, etc. None of my PVP ships use docking computers or lasers/multicannons for a loadout, except for maybe 1 OC/corrosive mc for the hull damage bonus.

Ha, yes I've been doing something very similar myself lately. I've been getting multiple fines per kill though; not sure why.

Hang on, you can scan for engineering mats? 🤯 How does that work?

If you do a basic scan of a ship (i.e point the reticle at it until all the details resolve) you occasionally get data materials. I always scan ships in front of me during supercruise / on approach to stations.

Mat grinders would have you believe that's not a thing :sneaky:

I thought that @SlickPBW meant you could scan them to see which mats you'd get after you make them go boom :)

Yes that was what I meant and how I collected the 81 needed in about 90 minutes if that instead of 2 weeks scanning wakes. My bad it is actually a crashed sidewinder isn't it?

Nope, it's a crashed Cobra III, Commander Jameson Crash Site at HIP 12099 1B.

You can fill grade IV Atypical Encryption Archives and grade V Adaptive Encryptors Capture in less than 5 minutes (plus MCF and CIF), then off to the nearest trader at Diaguandri Ray Gateway.

It is considered the best site for this activity. There's a sweet spot where you don't have to drive anywhere, just turn the turret and you'll scan five.
