It's a Shame

It's really a shame to play a game this beautiful, and know there's so much more to it, and find myself saying, "This sucks." That, sadly, is exactly what I find myself saying.

I know there's always got to be some improvement possible, some things to earn, in every game. On the other hand, I play games to have fun. I get into this game, and for several hours, I have been working, working, working.

If I want to work, I'll call up my boss and say "Hey, I want more hours," and at least I'll make money in real life. Plus, I've never been robbed on the job.

My specific complaints:

I am dropped into the game with very few credits, a garbage scow that can't fight or trade worth a damn, and then ambushed by pirates that outclass me so drastically as to be unbeatable and impossible to escape every few minutes (Really? That often? Where in God's name do they all COME from?!) and wind up having to restart with the same ship (God help me if I manage to work for the dozens upon dozens of hours needed to actually buy a better one and lose THAT) and a few thousand less credits thanks to the cargo that got blown to bits with the old one.

I'm not quite giving up on this game yet. I loved First Encounters (once I hacked the game so I had a fighting chance, at least), and it's just not in me to give up so soon.

But I am Really Really Mad at the devs right now for thinking that the fact that so many people loved their old game meant that they could repeat all their worst mistakes with impunity.

I would like a REAL start point please, not this suicidal shoulda-stayed-in-bed workaday garbage. I'm serious; even in First Encounters there were a couple places you could go right off the bat to make some real money. In this game you get squat.

I cant follow you. The game is MUCH to easy and no real challange at the moment. Maybe its not your kind of game?

Wow, this page got quite a lot of responses. Everything from the informative and helpful, to the condescending, all the way to idiotically rude.

Thanks to all of you who helped. I've got my feet on more solid ground now; traded a bit, learned to run away effectively (a lot easier if you start running as soon as you're dragged out of SC), finally got better ships and arms mixes, and yes, learned to fight, at least well enough to take on NPCs.

There's really only one thing I want to respond to here: I really hope they DON'T make it harder to run away. Oh, they need to make it a crime to run away from the cops and security types just to make it realistic, but frankly if it was any harder to escape from pirates, too many players would stay stuck in free Sidewinders until they quit the game in disgust.

Okay 1. The sidewinder is not a garbage scow, you can do plenty of damage with it when you learn to control it well. And 2. The whole point of Elite is that you go "from rags to riches". You ever play a mmmorp? You don't start with ten million gold and a "Sword of a Thousand Truths". You start at level 1, with 10 copper, a rank 1 fireball spell, and a wooden sword. YOU need to build yourself up one step at a time, until you get all the really good stuff. It would not be fun starting with everything, because then you have nothing to achieve.

Ok I'm done ranting lol.

It's strange, I am having a very hard time finding pirats to kill. I managed to find one in a sidewinder and wasted him, yay :) But no pirates have attacked me yet, and I have flown alot around in anarchic systems. Was attacked by another player not so far from a station in an anarchic system. I managed to boost away and super cruise

If you're looking for pirates, try the Navigation point near the star when you jump into a system. There are usually a few hanging around there.

3-4 hours today on my first solo bash though I have logged many hours in the Original Elite and also Oolite so its familiar territory for me. Hardest bit for me was finding the docking request as its buried in a sub menu and was a while looking for it!

Already hit 4k creds in just a couple of trade contracts, only seen one hostile who wasn't fast enough to keep up with the Sidewinder which has always been one of the fastest ships in the Elite universe so it was an easy escape.

I must admit I was disappointed we don't start in the good old Cobra Mk III but it will be all the more worthwhile when I get one. Elite always had a fairly steep learning curve in one way or another which can be frustrating but once again all the more rewarding when you succeed. Just be glad its not a free to pay to win mmo that demands over $2k just to compete with top rank players and that you have actually earned the right to fly a better ship.

Now I just have to work out what everything does with all the newfangled kit we get to play with :D
