Newcomer / Intro It's all relative

Good morning fellow Commanders,
I recently became aware of ED and became captivated by just how "real" it seemed. Coming from X3:AP, it's a marked difference from the too-smooth and unnatural ship movements- that slight vibration as your throttle comes up gave me goosebumps the first time I saw it on video. Yesterday I bought the game and all I have seen is post after post about the 1.1 patch and how game-breaking it is. Sure, there are absolutely issues that need to be addressed. Sure, they should have beta'd this for a longer period of time and been less beholden to the whims of Marketing. At the end of the day, I know that the bugs will be fixed and the game will improve. But for right now, I'm having a blast just learning the game- maybe I'll see you out there.

Yes, the 'feel' of the ships is awesome. The first time I took a Viper out for a spin gave me goosebumps. That throaty engine roar on throttling up!

Exactly! I'm going to be getting a HOTAS next, haven't used one since the old Force Feedback Sidewinder but ED almost demands it.

Agreed, it's an amazing experience but by no means perfect. I personally think FDev are still way more communicative than many other devs, but much of my prior experience is console-based so I'm comparing it the state of games like Destiny (epically empty), Battlefield 4 (broken for months) and Assassin's Creed Unity (erm... "cinematic"?) and the communication levels of the big three publishers (i.e. downright lies or total silence).

I'm happy adapting to many of the new features and waiting for the slow introduction of new features rather than claiming the game is broken or empty to that I have been lied to, but I'll also be happy if some of the minor tweaks pull back some of the less-appreciated major changes. Beta 1.1 was definitely too short, I was expecting it to have been at least twice as long and for 1.1 to have gone live at the end of February. Hopefully FDev take more time testing 1.2.

With all the furore it's nice to read a pleasant, reasonable post. Hope you have fun CMDR!

Edit: Yes, the game is much more fun with a HOTAS... then you'll try head-tracking and have your mind blown again ;)

I play with a HOTAS (Thrustmaster T-Flight) and Voice Attack.

Between shifted HOTAS buttons and issuing voice commands I don't have to touch the keyboard at all.

Highly recommended.

** I've also ordered the EDTracker put together by some enterprising forumites.

HOTAS -> Head Tracking -> Oculus Rift (hopefully). One step closer to that dream of a VR flight sim since the real thing most likely won't happen in our lifetimes.

in that order.... I'm building a chair/pilot seat and squeeze that in between. Oh my what has this game already done to me. Spend a lot of credit... ehh dollars. New keyboard, voiceattack, voicepack, RAM update, headset... waiting for EDtracker. :)

Good times

Fly safe and have fun.

Thanks! I'd be spending a lot more if I didn't build a new PC last year. The pilot's chair sounds amazing!

I know what you mean - I haven't been a PC gamer for 15 years so I had to buy a new gaming rig, monitor and HOTAS just to play Elite; honestly I HAD to! ;-) I couldn't miss the opportunity to play Elite again after all these years. Kit arrives next week - lurking in the forums till then.

Welcome commander!

Yeah, Elite is a very different beast from the X-series. :) Have fun flying around and discovering how everything works. And don't worry about 1.1, people on the general board like to complain in general. There was one major bug (collision damage being false aggregated) and a hilarious one (shooting your own missiles automatically). Both fixed within 24 hours. So sit back, grab a beverage and explore the galaxy!
