This is mainly a comment, not a criticism or looking for help. I am only a couple of weeks into Elite and one thing strikes me above all others and that is how rare it is to meet another Cmdr. I can spend a couple of hours travelling around and only see on the radar one non NCP at a time, if I'm lucky. Is there a place where real people congregate or is this it - a life of loneliness between the stars?

If you're looking to meet more people, consider moving to Colonia. The "Bubble" there is only a few dozen systems, so it's far more common to run into other Cmdrs in open.

I spent an hour in Open play yesterday just to find a player so as to do a screenshot of the target box to answer someone's question.
Then half an hour later I started the game in Mobius Eurasia and had hollow icons in every second system or so, should have looked there first.
It certainly varies where you are in the bubble but in the end I had to go to an engineer's base to find a commander in open - daft.

You can usually reliably meet people in Open at one of the hotspots, say Deciat, Maia, Shinrarta or one of the engineer systems, plus the Powerplay headquarters ofc, but don't complain about the possibly rude company afterwards. Or join one of the larger factions like TBAG SSL for instance, there are usually plenty of members online and it may be more to your taste all in all.

outta the bubble in open its possible to never see a living soul I went a year or so without a contact out there

I usually only see other real people in Shinrarta & Sol. Every now & then I might see someone at another station, but its few & far between for sure. If you wanna see people tho, get Elite in something & go to Shinrarta at night......
