"It's okay, I've been sent to find you."

I was conducting some missions last night in and around the Eotienses system. It was a mix of smuggling, delivery, etc. missions just as a way of breaking up the monotony of the trade runs I've been doing lately. When jumping in to the destination system, I received a direct message from an NPC saying words along the lines of "It's okay, I've been sent to find you."

I hunted around for any possible sources of this message but found nothing. I know it was an NPC because I was in Solo mode. I dropped out by each of the four signal sources in the area (two unidentified, one weak and one strong) and found nothing. No contacts to return a direct message to, and simply replying to Local: also didn't work.

Has anybody else encountered messages like this while on missions?

Yep. I've had it a few times. There seems to be a spawn issue. What he does spawn he drops out of SC and you follow to hear what he has to say.

I've had them, one time I did find the guy, he was in supercruise, then dropped out leaving a wake to follow. He then just tried to talk me out of doing the mission. Other times I haven't been able to find him. I just ignore them now

Look for FSW fly there drop out - but be aware sometimes its a trap ( got attacked yesterday when dropping out after sb wanting to talk to me ).

Encountered this MANY times on assassination missions. The character typing is supposed to spawn near you in SC and then tell you to follow/drop in his wake, where he will give you an option to update/forfeit your mission etc.
The reason many times you can't see him in the contacts tab I think is a spawn bug. Sometimes if you wait enough, he spawns, other times he doesn't. This might happen multiple times in the same mission though, if you don't follow him the first time.

Thanks, guys, pretty much what I did after I couldn't find the second one in a row.

If they spawn near you they drop out right after they have spoken. You have to find the nearest FSW and go in.

I had an amusing encounter with one in early 1.3.

I was on a mission to kill pirates in an unpopulated empty system. I found one in a USS as a mission target, and shot and killed him. Immediately, a Viper appeared in this part of normal space, having jumped into our battle arena. As this was my first such mission, I thought he was an accomplice, even though he didn't have the Mission Target label, but as it was an anarchy system and he had a Lawless tag, I shot him anyway. As I shot him, he started saying, "Well, this is unexpected..." and seemed to take it in his stride. :D

Jumping back to supercruise, a minute later an NPC with the same name as the guy in the Viper returns in supercruise, asking me to follow him to talk. This time, though, he is in a Cobra. He had the same legal status as before and no mission target label. That was when I realised I had probably shot down an innocent man. Still, as there was no faction in the system to enforce any law, I didn't have a bounty on me. ;)

Still, it was amusing for this guy to politely appear, get shot down, then politely reappear again. LOL

I have noticed it a lot they appear 2 - 5 min after they send the message. and do so behind you. I haven't the inclination to turn around and slow. if they want me I suggest they appear first and then send the message.

since 1.3 update
