It's time for another Galaxy/System map question!

Yes, yes.... please try to be patient! :D I have read every single gal-map-in-vr thread, and yet I am still confused and/or missing something.

I have finally set up my controls on the HOTAS (X52) so now I am fairly adept at moving about in the GalMap. But there's still something I don't understand:

Once I have my system selected, and the little pop-up is on screen, how (without resorting to the mouse) do I choose which icon I want (i.e. Select/Plot Route/System Map etc)? And how do I move between the map tabs with the HOTAS?

I seem to have similar problems with the other panels, too... i.e. I can open them and select anything in the panel that is active, but I can't work out how to move panels (ie from Modules to Inventory, or Contacts to Navigation, etc.)

If I try to assign another 4 way hat on the X52 I get a clash of functions warning...

Any help appreciated. And here's some screenshots :D

I spent an hour yesterday, in a huge ring system, floating about in the camera suite. Absolutely amazing when you have no ship around you!!!

I use the UI movement keys. Up, down left and right, the same way you use the UI with your Hotas.

Once I have my system selected, and the little pop-up is on screen, how (without resorting to the mouse) do I choose which icon I want (i.e. Select/Plot Route/System Map etc)?

Controls->Interface Mode->UI PANEL UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT

And how do I move between the map tabs with the HOTAS?

Controls->Interface Mode->NEXT PANEL TAB/PREVIOUS PANEL TAB

I seem to have similar problems with the other panels, too... i.e. I can open them and select anything in the panel that is active, but I can't work out how to move panels (ie from Modules to Inventory, or Contacts to Navigation, etc.)

As above.

It's really important that you have some distinct UI navigation buttons (up/down/left/right/next page/prev page/select/back), and that you only carefully add other, non-UI functions to these buttons. E.g. you could have l/r/up/dn on a hat, and also have "pips" on the same, as you may not require to set pips while in menu. But don't map any thrust/movement to the UI hat. Same for the next/prev page button: I have a second hat used for that, and target selection in non-UI mode.

Now, when configuring your galaxy map controls, you can map your thruster controls to navigate through the galmap as you do with your ship. I also bound my pinky+thrusters to fw/bw/zoom in/zoom out. Your UI-hat and selection buttons work as usual. With this config you have no need to learn anything new to maneuver through the map.

I find the Galaxy map the hardest thing in VR so far.
I've got the X52 but still it's painful to try and find a setup that works.

The system map is not much better - I can't seem to Zoom it at the moment.

Not sure if it's a bug or what but now all the planets in the system map appear almost completely white!! so I can't tell what they are, the Stars are okay but the planets are just not loading textures it seems.
Anyone else notice got this issue ?

My VR HMD is Rift CV1 ( bought last week )
My Settings I'm using are:

The key to the galaxy map is tilting it, so make sure you have that assigned (that and selecting the discs - not the stars).

Not zooming in the system map sounds like your bindings aren't set up correctly. If you use the throttle axis, maybe make sure it is set for full range (if that's even an option)?

I'd guess that your custom GUI colors are affecting the system map colors. Do avatars look correct? Maybe switch back to standard to check?

I use the joystick, like a mouse on a mouse pad, to move forward & backward, and side to side, and the twist axis to rotate the map.
I use the throttle to zoom in and out.
Then I have two other axis or button pairs to move up and down and to tilt the map.
It's all very natural after a short while.

For the system map, the key to move fast is to zoom out. Of course, you need to be able to zoom back in again.

Oh, guys, and some years ago (and may have changed by now, didn't try), the galaxy map was unusable in VR when the grid was disabled. So, if you once did that: ENABLE THE GRID. It's in the settings tab within the galaxy map's left menu (the last tab).

Cheers! Many useful replies.

I now know what I need to change in terms of movement to make it a bit better.

And MAIN SEQUENCE answered the big problem I was having with both Gal Map tabs and menus and the other panels. Probably once I've got the panel-related Interface Modes assigned properly, it'll all become a bit easier.

I've been using custom colours for years, they don't affect the system map.
I ran the game on my monitor ( 2d non-vr ) just to check and the same system map was still wrong, so the problem doesn't appear to be VR related. I'll do more tests later and maybe log a bug.

The only part stumping me at the moment is stopping the select pointer from moving around when I move my head - it really messes up trying to select anything

?? Never had that. Didn't even know this behaviour is configurable. Have you bound your head-movement to the mouse pointer or something weird?

I may have not quite written what I meant... the POINTER doesn't move but the focus does. So if I try to select anything, even with the mouse and clicking on it, it won't. If I *have* selected something and get the dialogue box (select, plot route etc) and move my head, it (the box) moves. It means that whenever I select anything I cannot move my head at all or I lose focus.
