I've heard Gimballed weapons are bad for the Viper. Why is this?

So far I'm having fun with 3 multi cannons and 1 burst laser on my Viper. I'm running all Gimballed and don't seem to have a problem but I've read in a few threads that Gimballed is bad for the Viper. Why is this? Also if I'm wanting to stick with Gimballed for now, would it be better to go Cobra?

There is no problem with Gimballed weapons in the Viper. Many people just prefer the fixed weapons because they do more damage. It takes more skill to use the fixed though so if you are getting more hits with gimballed, I'd say stick with them... or train yourself to use the fixed weapons to hone that particular skill.

I flew with gimbals on top but fixed on the bottom. Keeps pressure on in a turn up top but more dps plus a fallback plan for chaff on bottom

I have no idea what they are talking about... During my time bounty-hunting with the Viper (i used it a lot as i never upgraded towards the Cobra and after that i bought the Type 6), i had ALL Gimballed (2 Beam Lasers and 2 Multi-Cannons or Cannons at times) and they were GREAT. Can't go wrong with Gimballed in any spaceship in my experience so far...

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm aware fixed does more damage but for me I find I do much better overall with Gimballed. This isn't b/c I can't aim well, in fact I come from a big FPS background, I can aim fairly solid. What I'm not used to however is flight and situational awareness while flying in general as I have not played many of these games at all.

So with that said by sticking with gimballed it allows me to focus more on my engine management, and situational awareness much more. In the end that seems like a good balance for myself.

I don't think there's anything "wrong" with gimballed on the viper itself, I just personally don't like gimballed weapons because I shoot when I know I can hit with fixed and sometimes I feel as if the gimballed "wiggle" makes me miss shots that I would have easily made especially at a distance. But that's just personal taste than capability

Its not that gimballed are bad on a viper, they are just as good as on other ships, its that the viper has all 4 hardpoints near the center so they are good for fixed weapons.

Cobra for example has 2 hardpoints out on its wings where it isn't great for fixed weapons.

I find the gimbal fire arcs on the Viper to be slightly annoying; the C2 hardpoints won't track (very far) above centre, basically. I guess if they're non-gimballed then this never becomes an issue.

The bottom points are not at the front of the ship, so they can't angle up much. Because most players pitch up, because of cockpit visibility, those 2 points aren't fantastic. They will move down a full amount though, so you can use them on anything under your ship (which you might not be able to see)

The advantate/disadvantage of gimballed weapons is not only a viper thing

advantage of gimballed weapons:
- you keep your mind free for targeting and flying

disadvantage of gimballed weapons
- gimballed weapons can be countered with chaffs

Also there is a missrate with the gimballed weapons against smaller ships but you may have also this miss rate with fixed weapons :)

just keep your nose a little bit above the target

They are not. To have a high hit chanse on sub systems is much better than fixed

To be honest, hitting with fixed pulse on sub-systems is kind of easy to, even fixed guns adjust in small degree. But fixed multi-cannons do not work very well for that because you need to keep on target of the sub-system for so long, which means you are an much easier target than you would be with gimbals especially against larger ships.

Basically what fergal said - on the Cobras small hardpoints, I'd deem gimballed weapons pretty much a necessity due to the lack of adjustable convergence, which isn't an issue on the Viper.

I'm a lousy shot, but I personally hate using gimballed weapons (it feels like I'm trying to aim a gun with someone standing next to me having grabbed my arm and constantly yanking it around). Don't have issues with others using them - I'm not the "real men use fixed" type of person, but I personally don't like using them.

Couldn't bear flying a Clipper due to the hardpoint placement rendering fixed weapons completely unviable.

I fit a pair of gimballed and fixed weapons separated by damage type. This way your weapons don't generate too much heat and since one pair is gimballed, you will be able to hit your target with all weapons even though their travel speeds are different.

I use fixed beams on the C2 and gimballed multicannons on c1. Just hate it when I'm pitching up and my mc's don't shoot. What annoys me the most is when only one mc fires leading to weird reload times.

I tried gimballed beams as well but don't like them. If they don't lock up properly they go all disco which looks silly...

Imo, gimballed will always do more damage than fixed at close distance (<1.5-2km) irregardless of skill. This is due to the fact that it has a firing arc that is much larger than for fixed weapons, meaning that even if you are Space Robin Hood with fixed guns, the gimbals will get a lot of hits that it is simply impossible for you to get. Even when people chaff, gimbals do decent close range on the viper since the guns will run back and forth on the target (time your shooting :p).

On the flip side, fixed is much better for hitting at range, with gimbals losing a lot of DPS at range due to missing more, so to each his own. Running a mix is always an option too, and can help to mitigate some of the disadvantages each offers.

Personally, I run 2 C1 Gimballed Beams on the top, and 2 C2 Gimballed Multi-Canons on the bottom. I laugh at most pilots with fixed weapons as I dance out of their arc with my gimbals keeping pressure on them.

I haven't used gimballed weapons until now because I prefer sniping the opponents from a distance. But today I got my Hotas and feel like I can't aim as precise with this thing(at least until now), so I think I'll get 2 small gimballed lasers which should work well paired with the lower turn-rate of the Viper.

I always run gimballed on my ships, including my Viper - it's a necessary evil when you're playing with keyboard/mouse and don't have the fine control you do with a HOTAS or joystick/keyboard combo.

When I can afford it, I'll upgrade to a flight stick set-up, and I'm sure that I'll switch to the higher powered fixed weapons for at least the bigger slots on my Viper.

Apart from the loss of lock caused by targets throwing chaff (just tail 'em and let those guns cool down until the chaff disperses), I've never had a problem with gimbal mounts.

Hmm? I do better with fixed weapons using mouse than joystick.
