I've just 'upgraded' my Viper to a Cobra...

I wanted to broaden my diet a bit. Try something new. Do a bit of smuggling. Run some rares. Maybe get my feet under the table with one of the factions. It's going great! But there's a problem.

I can't quite escape the feeling that I just sold my Corvette and bought a minivan. Someone convince me I've made the right choice. Please?

Well it's hard to fit your 15 kids in the Corvette. Plus Corvette's are for .... "jerks"...

Full A Cobra -> Boost at 440 and rough cost at 6/7M
Full A Viper -> Boost at 405 and rough cost at 2.5M

I personally preferred my Viper, but it’s useless for anything except combat. The Cobra is a great ship. Have you upgraded things yet, maybe a few A grade components will make it feel better?

You've traded in a superiority fighter for essentially a jack-of-all-trades bounty hunter ship. She's not going to excel at anything, but shes going to be very flexible at different jobs.

if you want more cargo space, larger fuel and cargo capacity and some firepower, you have made the right decision. if you only want to fight, go back to the viper.

viper=better fighter, cobra=good allrounder.

I prefer the Viper to the Cobra in terms of how it feels, certainly, but the Cobra is just bigger and with that comes more module options, more cargo space, and more money-making ability.

Still prefer the Viper though.

Both fine cars, but one is useful for more than one thing.

Ah, that's helping.

It's rocking solid Cs. The Viper was worth a cold million when we parted, which I know isn't much by galactic standards, but it means a Cobra with a decent spec at least. I took it for a shakedown in its stock config, and I can definitely feel the difference. I think I may just need to get the thrusters to A ASAP.

I know, but does she have to do it so quietly?

Or you can be like me and go for the multiple ship route. I have an A-rated Viper that I use for combat and an A-rated Adder I use for exploration. Soon to add another ship for some mining (yes, I want to get into mining for some odd reason). I also have a few Sidewinders strategically placed solely meant for transport between ships, which is kinda pointless now that I think about it considering both my Viper and Adder are at Banki...

Even when the new ships come out, I have such a soft spot for my Viper that I'll most likely never get rid of it. Even if it becomes outdated, old, and antiquated I've been through so much with it that it really feels like my own ship.

You mean that feeling doesn't go away? You're not helping at all. But then no-one ever saved up for a Fer de Lance by drag racing and listening to Creedence.

Nope. You made a mistake. Buy back the Viper and save untill you can afford them both. Use the Cobra for business, the Viper for fun :)

That was the original plan, but that would mean staying on one place. It turns out I hate staying in one place. A route was plotted and only one ship could come with me.

My sentiments exactly.

But OP you did make the right decision based on you assertion to broaden your diet. You can do more things and earn more in the Cobra. Couple of rare runs and you can have a Viper too. Cobra is faster and pitch turns quicker so is no slouch.

Y'see, I only played in a Viper for about a day before I felt the "combat only" was too restrictive. My path of enlightenment has been:
Eagle->Adder->Viper(1day)->Cobra->T6->Cobra, where the T6 was a 100T per run money spinner for 7 days exactly. The 7th day was the day I started to shout at it. Time to move on, thought I. You won't regret the Cobra, but you need 4MCr to get it pretty decent.

If you have no soul, buy a T6 and get some money-building done, the flibble back into your Cobra and A-class it's important bits. If you have a soul, buy a T6 anyway. Quickest way to feel as though you don't. :)

The Cobra is a wonderful ship.

As the game is now shifting to a more combat-oriented playstyle, you may want to get a Viper, and keep it in reserve.

Someone tested it, the Cobra is actually more maneuverable than a Viper in every axis except yaw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnAVUIo2420

The issue is that it is significantly heavier than a Viper, so it takes longer to actually change direction. The C1 hardpoints are mounted at the back of the wings on the bottom of the ship, so hitting anything above the midline of the Cobra is just about impossible. It's also a far bigger target for someone using fixed weapons and its shields are weaker than a Viper's.

That said, it's faster, has a significantly larger power plant, so you're less likely to run into power issues (you'll still have trouble if you try to run more than one Shield Cell Bank), it can actually carry cargo, it's more heavily armored (with military grade bulkheads you'll be able to sustain a good amount of punishment if your shields drop) and has a much larger jump range. My A-Graded cobra, fully loaded, can jump almost 18ly, empty I can jump 20. If downgraded a few components to D (sensors and Life Support come to mind) I could jump even farther, have a faster boost rate and change direction slightly better.

I like my Cobra ;-) It means I don't have to keep a ship in storage to do what I want to do on any given day.

The cobra once upgraded is a tough old boat too.

with some deft control and good distancing, you can keep up with freagles in the turns (with decent thrusters though).
anything smaller than a cobra just melts with the correct weapons setup but its got enough strength to really dent anacondas.
Its a nice jack of all trades.
not the biggest cargo hold but enough to make some profit, reasonable jump distance, big fuel capacity and pretty quick.
