I have not had an issue - does E D play sounds when you have not got V A running?
E D doesn't play sounds or recognise the mic regardless of whether V A is running.
Which indicates it's actually an E D problem. Just coincidental to the V A being updated.
I've used my headphones in Guild Wars 2 and they work fine.
Where do I go from here?

Make sure that you have ticked the "run as Administrator " in VA setting in order for VA to access ED.
I have no idea why Elite isn't outputting sounds now for you. I assume you have gone into options / audio and ensured there are no untoward settings. All I can suggest is to go to the Options tab in the upper right of your launcher and select "Validate Game Files" to see if that helps. Have you tried the Single Player Combat Training choice in the game selection to see if the audio works in that (it is a different set of files - you may need to install it)? Other than that - maybe a support ticket would help?

when you open windows volume mixer is the slider all the way up for elite and more importantly is the sound indicator bar bouncing below the slider?
