Jaques Station in Beagle Point. Is it really a good idea?

It is exciting to have station around in the void and how human colonies are expanding out of the bubble but i cannot stop thinking if it is really good idea. Same reason because im not very happy about having a station around Sag A* despite being one of the most popular destination for explorers. It can be used as a base for gankers and griefers who kill explorers.
Im also worried about people staying at Jaques Station and use it as a shuttle to reach Beagle Point in one jump.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on this CG?

I think Beagle Point should stay the remote place that it is. If Jaques Station stays there for a while and eventually leaves again, why not. If it can transport players there, that'd be a bad joke. If there is one place in the galaxy people should have to make an effort in order to reach, it's Beagle Point imo.

That's the outcome of the CG if it succeeds.
It's already broken Tier 1.

Ah, ok, I've been asleep while all this went down, clearly. Last thing I saw was a CG to help Jacques get "unstuck", then I went to bed.

That would be kinda cool, actually, though, I'd prefer he do it in stages...

Z...

This.

1000 times this.

I don't think FD understand what Beagle Point is all about, its history, and why explorers see it as one of the ultimate goals.

Its probably the most challenging thing an explorer can do, travel to BP. Prior to Distant Worlds less than 50 players had ever made it out there.

You have to travel to Sag-A (which is less than halfway), deal with the route plotting issues the core throws at you, then once through the core, you cross the Bleak Lands, which can sap your will to live at times, then there's the Abyss, the toughest place in the galaxy to cross (depending where you cross) then its 10,000 light years through the Solitude Void as you edge your way to the Ceeckia sector through ever sparser systems.. then its about Jumponium management (depending on what ship you took).

Point is; getting to Beagle Point gives the player a set of challenges to overcome. Its a journey that has a great sense of achievement when you complete it - just ask the Distant Worlds fleet how they felt after their 3 month trek out there.

And when I say Beagle Point, I really mean that region as a whole. BP is just the focal point these days, but the far outer rim as a whole is a special place due to its remoteness.

If Jaques does it in one jump with hitchhikers aboard, that will be one of the most short-sighted things FD have ever done.

By all means send Jaques out there as a permanent monument with BP as his final resting place, and make it a testament to all those who reached it on their own, but please don't make it a short cut back and forth!

I think it isn't a good idea. I'm too far away now to use Jaques' service but... It's like Erimus said, finding a McDonalds at Everest summit. And don't forget that if you dock with the station and head back to the bubble, you'll be bounced back to BP in case of virtual death.

Repairs and data selling would be fine but...all is in the journey, not in the arrival point.

Answer to OP question:
Its a very very bad idea.
I'm actually a little annoyed by it. Been away for a bit and have come back to a excrement storm.
Hope it doesn't happen, kills immersion, kills the remoteness of BP, and to be honest feels like it's negating the very hard efforts of CMDRs who have got to BP through trials and tribulations and are now even as we speak struggling to get home.
Bad idea indeed.

Throw in a Poll CMDR, would be interesting to see some stats on this.

I approve of this message!

Place the station on this side of the Abyss. That makes way more sense. The last stop before you brave the Abyss and venture into the sparse lands.

There is a last basecamp on Mt Everest, not a Mc Donalds at the top.

It's a place that should be remote of any kind of civilisation. It should be Zen like creaminess.

@FD, ask Ed! You've got an explorer in your resources .... use the man! :)

Agreed on it being a potential base for annoyance, though they might get bored faster; my sociological studies of the common muppet (rana tristitia) suggest an inverse correlation between distance outside the Bubble and the time they stick around.

I don't have any problem with the idea of people hitching a ride to Beagle aboard the station, except that they might find themselves stuck and reliant upon FD's support teams to move them back to the Bubble.

I do have a problem with the idea that Jaques can make the trip in one jump; ok, it's a big and uniquely equipped station and he's collecting stupendous amounts of fuel, but it doesn't seem to fit properly with the general level of technology. Argent's Quest did what, sixty or seventy light years (in a week!) with a hyperdrive? A boosted Conda might make eighty or ninety? Even the Thargoid warship only made a few hundreds in a long slow jump, and Jaques own previous observed jumps have been of about that order. It doesn't seem right for Jaques to be bouncing clean across the galaxy.

It would be funny if he's collecting the fuel for some clandestine but more plausible purpose, like jumping over to the Formidine in stages.

I was much more inclined to help when I thought it was a rescue and not vainglory...

A permanent base at BP?

Hmmmm....

Okay, I didn't know that I was one of the very few people to make it to BP before DWE (didn't know how few), so the rarity of the event makes it somewhat pointless to have a permanent base there. It's not economically viable for anything unless there is a network of connecting stations to it

A temporary ONCE off event? Yeah... that'll be a laugh as long as he sheds weight to make it (i.e. throws every ship out the airlock before jumping)

Making it in one jump.... weeeeellllllll..... I guess. HUGE, truly HUGE amount of fuel required to do this and then it's done. Anyone still out there *cough*me*cough* can cash in for being daft enough to hang around.

Then he can head back in stages... and people can drop in to refit / sell data etc while they're outbound. That would work and not break immersion.

Or.......

Vanish.

and by vanish, I mean: Andromeda anyone?

Or..... Kidnapped by chitinous foes?

Honestly I think you're being a bit negative at the moment, and possibly a bit precious about BP. Look at it this way: you have created something that the devs are using in the lore of the game. Our efforts have changed the course of the whole bloody game. Ours. The explorers. You know: the ones you keep saying are being ignored.

Just ensure there is some pressure to make it work correctly (no Uber taxi service to and from the bubble) and what we'll end up with is ANOTHER piece of history in this game inspired by the players in this forum. For crying out loud, this is the home of the Fuel Rats ( the most famous group in the game) and the DWE - the two largest undertakings in the whole history of this game.

Could we stop with the mass negativity and give a positive response to the devs? Constructive criticism and straight criticism are two very different things.

and after all that I want a badge. A big bright badge that says I made it there before the rabble arrived :D

I hope the GalNet article is just sloppily written and that in fact it means Jaques will embark on the long journey to BP the same way we did - traveling for several months, doing thousands of jumps - until he gets there, and doesn't actually do one huge 65K LY jump at once. Not only would the later pretty much nullify the sense of achievement one gets from traveling out there (it would feel stupid to fly there manually if you could just catch a ride with Jaques instead), it would also pretty much destroy the immersion of a vast galaxy. After all, why don't we see humanity spread much faster around the galaxy, using dedicated ships, if a privately owned space station, that isn't even made for traveling long distances in the first place, but rather was modified by his eccentric owner to facilitate space travil to some extent, can easily travel across the whole galaxy with a single jump, given enough fuel?

Give him a larger jump range by all means - 1000 LY perhaps - because he only jumps when the server restarts and thus will still need over a year to reach BP even with this increased FSD range, but don't obliterate the dedication deep space explorers have shown by making it a one-jump-trip! After all, he would be of much higher value to explorers if he'd slowly progress along the galactic highway to BP so they can catch up with him along the way to repair and sell exploration data than if he'd skip the whole way to magically appear at BP all of a sudden.

I see the loach has taken control of Traveller and he's now become an FD mouthpiece.

Curse you vile woolly sea urchin!

Oi!

I was providing a different (and somewhat more positive) point of view

There is no FD manipulation going on here

Yeah. And we don't take kindly to your type of positivism around here.

Serialously,

's nice to have events be triggered by this, but the event needs to be a little more ... credible? Less immersion breaking perhaps. I'd like Jaques to set off on a grand journey towards the abyss to create the "last restaurant in the galaxy" for explorers venturing into the abyss and weary explorers returning from it.

So, I'm completely green with a station in that area .... just rather not at the top of Mt Everest.
