Newcomer / Intro Jet Cone Boost; tried 20 times and it's not triggering

So first time I've tried this

I've got a fuel scoop, been inside 20 seconds on average. Need to go ridiculously slow in order to not just blow through the cone.

I've tried at least 20 times without it working. What am I likely doing wrong?

If it's relevant, I keep getting the FSD warning. Does that mean it's resetting the clock every time that comes up?

I've tried skimming it, flying straight through it, steering, not steering. Nothing seems to be working.

Generally, one's ship has to be in the jet cone for some amount of time before you'll see the message about the FSD being overcharged (or something like that).

My usual plan is:
  1. move a good distance away from the Neutron Star/White Dwarf
  2. slow to minimum speed and drop out of supercruise
  3. stop
  4. using AFMU, repair any damaged modules, and especially FSD, to at least 95%
  5. re-enable any repaired modules and go back to supercruise
  6. fly to one end of the jet cone
  7. Slow way down and enter jet cone with a trajectory facing away from the star (center of jet cones)
  8. once inside the jet cone, go to minimum speed (30km/s ???)
  9. wait until FSD SuperCharged message
  10. increase speed to half or less and move out of jet cone NOT in the direction of the star
  11. fly away from the jet cone, increase speed to full throttle
  12. start FSD for hyperspace jump
  13. enjoy the extra distance
BTW, White Dwarves are more turbulent experiences while in the jet cone and give much less distance. I've lost many T7s to "White Holes"...

I got it to work. For the Asp Explorer I'm using to make the trip to Colonia (I already had the ship vs buying a DBX) I have to fly at the middle point, lengthwise, of the cone and be pointed away from the star and it triggers as I pass through.

Distance issues maybe before?

Also; when does the FSD actually break? I remembered the JB damages the FSD and I didn't remember that before I left so i've no way to fix it lol....
Till I know better I switched to normal jumps

You will start to see FSD malfunctions below 80% integrity.

I don’t believe you’ll actually drop out of supercruise because of FSD failure unless it reaches zero.
