Join BETA now or wait until release date?

Hi All.

I'm new to the forum but a bit on an old timer (47 y/o) who enjoyed playing Elite on a BBC micro back in the early 80's. It was what got me into computer gaming!

Anyway, I've only just come to learn about Elite: Dangerous and can't wait to give it a go.

My question is, as I'm coming to the BETA so late should I spend £50 today on the BETA or £35 on the release version and wait until 16/12?

Thanks.

Richard

Frankly, I'd wait and see how release turns out. There are just too many open questions with the current beta release, and the remaining perks aren't that great (the digital art book has potential to be cool though if that strikes your fancy).

Thanks Shadowdancer.

My heart is telling me to buy it now, my brain says to wait. I get so little time to play games I'll be lucky to get 5 or 6 hours a week use out of it anyway.

Buy the release (mercenary pack) now.
.
it costs less now (£35) than it will do when released (£40) and will have the additional eagle.
.
And then, if you can't wait any longer, you could upgrade to Beta. :D

Doh! Stupid Brain. Lost to the Heart a month or so ago.

But as of now and with limited playing my Brain would recommend the pre-order as well But my heart...

get that mercenary pack now. and enjoy the game when its out, in about 5 weeks with the christmas period coming up and some spare time (hopefully) to enjoy space ;)

I'm being forced to follow my brain.

We have a Mac at home, so I'm not playing for another 4 months at best, anyway. It makes the most sense for me to purchase the Mercenary Pack now and just wait until the Mac version becomes available 1Q, 2015.

I actually like the benefits of the Merc Pack in the sense that I really don't want the free pass to visit Sol. I just see that as another challenge - having to up my rep with the Federation if I actually want to go there. I'm sort of hoping there are other limited access points like that in the game.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

Most of it was very sensibly advising ordering now in preparation for release in December. However, my heart won the battle!

Can't wait to install it tonight.

Oh my god... COMMANDERS, be ready for new newbies questions on the forum ^^

Jokes appart: well done, good choice :) HAVE FUN... as some already told to: it's not the destination, it's the way/day to it which counts...

OP, a quick tip: If you find yourself experiencing long load times, or long pauses when entering/exiting super cruise, try giving solo mode a go - the multiplayer mode is not without its bugs at the moment.

Welcome to the Club Commander.

Now prepare yourself for annihilation, as we only have a few weeks until release, people are going to be a bit more aggressive until the final wipe.

You'll be wanting to play the game at release, that much is a given. Because it'll completely rock. So the question is, do you want to play it in the month and change left until then? If it were me and I hadn't played it yet I'd jump all over it! Just remember all your progress will be flushed firmly down the loo come Nov 22:nd, and possibly again somewhere between then and Dec 16:th.

The only computers I have that are capable (theoretically) of running ED are Macs as well, but I went for the Beta package just a couple of days ago. That way I figure I'll be able to get in on the Mac beta when it begins, and hence hopefully be playing a month or two earlier than I would otherwise. Otherwise I knew I'd be kicking myself as soon as the Mac beta is announced.

As far as the free pass to visit Sol, I agree with you*, and it would be nice if there was an option to start a pilot in the game without the benefit of those extra perks like the Sol pass or the extra ship (the latter of which I guess I can just decline to use if I want a pilot to go without it). But I'm telling myself that there will undoubtedly still be an endless number of challenges to face and hills to climb in the game, even with those few extra perks available. (I'm sure I read somewhere on here that there are other restricted systems besides Sol, by the way.(

* It's still going to be far better than the XL Edition of Gran Turismo 5 was, at least. That one gave me something like 15 extra free cars, some of which were quite expensive. And in the process it completely removed any impetus I had to actually play the game in order to earn enough money to BUY such vehicles. It actually ruined the game for me.
