Journal of an Explorer

Yesterday, I set out for the stars. Today, I found my first Earth-like world. Such a beauty. How engrossing it was to watch it slowly spin. Alien continents, alien oceans, but also so familiar. I made my discovery in a blossoming binary system with more than 40 astronomical objects, It me more than an hour to scan them all.

I'm currently heading south-east from Imperial space with small jumps. I need to accumulate enough credit so I can buy an advanced scanner and head out into the vast emptiness of space. I cannot wait but, for now, my trusty Adder with her intermediate scanner will have to do.

I'm heading forward into the unknown. CMDR McKennitt out.

Good luck!!!! The Adder is a beautifull explorer, and instead of trading, if you don't like it, you can outfit and upgrade ships with data payout.
There are many things uncharted near the civilized bubble, but your Adder can bring you almost everywhere.

Fly Safe CMDR.
Dont bust the glass,
dont go afk while pointed at a star,
don't taunt the neutron stars - they have a bad attitude,
always know where your next fuel stop is,
and most important: bring back pictures.

and watch out for the nebula's....they talk to you....and assume familiar shapes to draw you in....but its a trap.

It is lonely and cold out here. So many icy rocks, so many barren planets.

But sometimes, life emerges from the most incredible places. I discovered my first gas giant with water-based life, beyond two asteroid belts, around an M dwarf with no terrestrial planets. So unexpected…

Do they, now? The song of the spheres, maybe? Can't wait to hear it, although I'm currently making my own route away from known objects and well-travelled routes. I'm aiming for the southern edge of the Galaxy, all the way down. Will see whether I make it there as my modules are starting to suffer from the cold and harsh environment…

My computer tells me this world with a 100% sulfure dioxyde atmosphere would be terraformable. I do not envy the colons who would have to live in such a harsh environment, so far out from the remote sun.

And, here, I recognized the name of a fellow explorer… ;)

Jumps are getting longer and longer; I'm reaching lower density regions. A sure sign that I'm heading to the Galactic edge even if I'm still very far from it… And I almost ran into a star as I was writing this in my exploration journal. I must pay more attention!

This damn giant just fried my tail. I am learning the hard way to coast these carefully…

Edit: But in this system, 2 water worlds were just waiting to be scanned. Well worth the frying as the scan money will nicely pay for a new paint job and more!

500 Lyr from civilisation, I figured I had gathered enough resources to head back and equip my Adder with an advanced scanner. And was I not disappointed: it netted me more than 2.5 million credits!

That's what I earned from scanning 80 entirely, including 31 undiscovered ones and surveying:
5 A stars (including 1 discovered)
6 F stars
11 G stars (5 discovered)
17 K stars (10 discovered)
68 M stars (27 discovered)
12 T brown dwarfs (9 discovered)
19 L brown dwarfs (11 discovered)
2 Y brown dwarfs
2 T Tauri stars

23 Class I gas giants (8 discovered)
3 Class II gas giants (3 discovered)
6 Class III gas giants
1 Class V gas giant (1 discovered)
3 Helium-rich gas giants
2 Gas giants with ammonia-based life

2 Gas giants with water-based life (1 discovered)
255 Icy planets (139 discovered)
37 Rocky ice planets (12 discovered)

46 Rocky planets (20 discovered)
119 High metal content planets (43 discovered)
5 Metal-rich worlds (1 discovered)
7 Water worlds
1 Earth-like world

The largest distance I travelled between two stars in the sam system is 535 kls.

After an evening reacquainting myself with civilization and savoring more than a few single malt whiskies, I wonder… Where to next to try my latest ship upgrades?

A pretty high metal content world found along the way with an active atmosphere:

Edit: And I am now a proud Trailblazer.

My first ammonia world:

I made a leap of faith today and sold my high-end Adder to buy a brand new Cobra Mk. III. Upscaling it was costly, though, and I am now heading back into the vastness of space to explore enough close-by systems so I can reach my rebuy cost again. I have no insurance at the moment and things are tensed. A couple dozen systems and everything should be fine. At least that's what I tell myself as I blast through interstellar space…

That should pay for a good chunk of that insurance :p

Edit: That whole system is a gold mine with 2 water worlds and 2 terraformable planets.

Home sweet home…

All is good and well in the end. I made more than three quarters of a million in a few hours of quick exploration and I repayed my insurance. I feel much less stressed now.

Never mind that I almost rammed the station when I realize I hadn't asked for docking permission, only to later loiter another landing pad. Exploration does some nasty tricks on your mind…

I was about 1000ly's out when I took this. I just love the scale of ED

Playing the space vinyles, I see. ;)
