Journey around the galaxy

Hello everyone,

I am getting ready for my long trip around the galaxy (I still need to grind a few millions to finish outfitting my Asp).
The plan is to get to the core of the galaxy the long way, by travelling along our arm, all the way to the center. I'll be scanning everything interesting on the way there, of course.
Once/if I arrive there, it will be time to decide if I want to get back in a straight line, or pick another arm to follow to its end :-D

I'll be streaming the whole thing on Hitbox (http://www.hitbox.tv/DaNoobFR), mainly because the low latency allows for better interactions with the viewers, and archiving it on Youtube for posterity. I don't know who would want to watch the whole trip, but it will allow me to track the time spent.

Wish me luck, and come say hi from time to time, it will be lonely out there:

OK guys, I'm done outfitting my Asp for the long journey. Here's what I got:
- Power plant A5: it's not the lightest, but it will be more tolerant to fuel scooping errors.
- Thrusters D5: lightest possible
- FSD A5: I need the longest jump range possible
- Life support E4: lightest possible
- Power distributor D4: lightest possible
- Sensors D5: lightest possible
- Fuel tank C5: 32 capacity
- Fuel scoop C6: there are better ones but they are way out of my means
- Cargo rack E5 (capacity 32): I know I won't need but it is weightless and you never know, maybe some friendly aliens will give me some stuff ;-)
- 2*auto field-maintenance units C3: hopefully they will be able to repair each other
- Shield generator D3: I think it's originaly a size 5 on this ship but I don't really need it. This one is lighter.
- Advanced discovery scanner
- Detailed surface scanner
- Enough money for insurance in case I die out there

What do you think? Did I make obvious mistakes? If you have advice, please hurry: I head out of colonized space tonight at 18:00 UTC :)

I don't think the auto field-maintenance can repair each other! If they can, it would be a waste of the ammo they need anyway... Having said that, I didn't bother with them at all, nor heatsinks (which many explorers recommend). I'm slowly making my way back from Sag.A, still at 95% hull. I made mistakes in outfitting (my power plant is too small and I can't boost :) - not that I have much need to).

So no, it all looks good to me. What is your jump range?

That's pretty much what my asp had, I've just traded it in for an anaconda and heading for the core myself

I think you'll be ok but take a heat sink, there's a small (but possible) chance you'll jump into a System with two stars so close it drops you out for being too close straight away and you won't be able to escape without taking heat damage, which could ruin your day if your power plant gets too low (my canopy suffered a crack when this happened to me the other day and was forced to turn back as I was worried another thing likethat would breach it )

Thanks for the advice guys. Knowing my luck and flying skills, I definitely need heat sink launchers. I bought 4, that I will put in different fire groups to only use one at a time. So that's 12 get-out-of-jail cards if I understand correctly.
The jump range is 32.20ly.

Oh and by the way, I won't be needing my trade route anymore since I'll be gone for weeks (months?), so if you want to use it, be my guest. Treat her well, it took me a looooooong time to find it.
Stations are 260ls and 50ls from their stars. The stars are 48ly apart, so 3 jumps with a decent FSD while fully laden. Supply and demand are high both ways so it should remain profitable for a while. Warning, both systems are anarchy and interdictions are quite frequent (more NPCs than players, but still), be ready to fight for your cargo or run like hell:
Larri - Isherwood Dock (Imperial Slaves, around 1400 profit) --> HIP 86063 - Chasles Landing (Gold, around 1600 profit)

@SteveLaw: sorry mate, the prices have been stable for weeks, I assumed I was alone on it :-/
@Kzak: wow, you're right! I missed that one. Now I have to find a station that sells it on my way out. Thanks :)

Epic!

I'm 8000LY out from Sag-A and have planned coming back the route you plotted.....eerie :D

Watch out coming back directly with your jump range. There is a sparse patch that my Conda struggled with and I have a 38.5LY jump range. That said, I am well below the galactic plane so that could have been why.

In any event, good luck. By far the most fun I have had in Elite thus far and my trip has just started gaining momentum. Oh yes, be very careful with neutron stars and brown dwarfs when extending. Turn 180 at zero thrust and only then accelerate away, keeping to the Explorer's fundamental Golden Rule:

Throttle ALWAYS at zero!

Fair Jumps Commander.

Also, auto-repair units can repair each other if you have more than one. They cannot repair themselves (such as if you have only one of them). That said, it's likely you'll only need one class 3 repair unit unless you are incredibly unlucky or inattentive while travelling.

Best wishes when you head into the Great Unknown. :)

Hey, good luck man!

I'm going to be doing the reverse route myself. Not a twitcher but I do write about what I do/find occasionally.

Not to discourage your effort, but isn't there going to be an update soon that will allow us to carry more than one fuel tank? Might make a difference for you. It would stink to be out in there and then find out that the fuel tank rule got changed. Well, you can always come home, refit and head back out. Good luck!

Well, the first step out has gone well. I am about 2000 LY away from the federation now, and the first planet I scanned had life on it!
I already burned two heat sinks, I really need to get better at fuel scooping...

@Twelvefield: Too bad for the fuel tanks, but I'm able to scoop quite often, so I should be able to live with it.
@EddyRockSteady: How do you do that? When I come out of hyperspace, I'm always full-throttle. Is there something to configure or do you just throttle down when you get out?

My nicest view of the day:

For some reason, I was unable to transfer the video from Hitbox to Youtube. Maybe it is too big? That's weird because a rough calculation puts it at 29GB, and Youtube's limit seems to be 128. I don't know...
Anyway, I saved it on Hitbox so "the first step in the dark" is safe for now :)
Feel free to come say hi tomorrow : http://www.hitbox.tv/DaNoobFR

Regards to scooping.

Take your time, scoop little and often.

I run a 7C scoop and rarely take above 400/s. I could to a max of 840 but that is cutting it fine.

This has 34.68ly jump range with full tank.
- Power Plant 2A
- Thrusters 4D
- Life Support 4D
- Power Distributor 1D

Fuel Scoop and AFMU are fine for whatever rating you can afford.

Turn off AFMU and Cargo Hatch. If you need to repair, drop out of supercruise and play with modules power to get AFMUs online.

Maybe you should have trained fuel scooping a little bit in inhabited space before you went out, OP; with 6C scoop (same as I have) it's fairly easy to max it out at 627 kg/s and to fill almost an empty tank to the top while keeping the heat well below the critical level (note the speed and position of my Asp relative to the star):

Good luck... and keep it cool mate :)

Goodluck on your travels! I'll wave at you from the outer arm.
.
Some tips:
- Cargo racks are useful to trick the planner into making smaller jumps, that can help extend your range through brown dwarf fields.
(without having to drop all the way down to an economy crawl)
- Enabling debug camera before the jump will make you arrive with zero throttle
- Scoop-able stars are A through O, except L.
- Not supplying power to cargo hatch and power distributer (not needed if you don't have boost anyway) will damage them over time. (yet who cares, you don't use them)
- The planner always assumes a full fuel tank for calculating routes. Sometimes you can make a short cut in low density areas if you pay attention to the route.

Good luck on your journey CMDR, I am heading out on my 3rd exploring trip now and this will be my longest and purely for the money. First heading to X Carinae then to ETA Carinae then wherever I feel like it. Scanning everything of value on the way (apart from rocky planets) and using economy jumps to maximise system count.

Stay safe out there and remember to mash the X key every time you jump.

Or you can just zero your throttle during the countdown.

I really doubt this is a thing.

I found that zeroing the throttle didn't work for me 1 out of 50 jumps (I don't have a slider, sometimes the game ignored all my attempt to set throttle to 0)
Using the debug cam always works. I alt-tab out while the drive is charging up, switch back after I hear the ship stop. Hasn't failed in the last 2000 jumps.
.
The damage to the cargo hatch and power distributor probably doesn't matter, yet I kept wasting afmu ammo on them. They do degrade if unpowered. Since I put the power back on they've stayed at 100%. I could just let them rot I guess.
