Joystick broke. switching to controller?

So my joystick broke and I am contemplating switching to a controller than buying a new joystick.
Reason being is all the joysticks I get seem to develoup the same issue: the yaw axis gets funny and starts "twitching" by itself even if I am not touching it.

Took a look at it in the software and you can see the yaw axis "vibrating" while the pitch and roll remain still, even with deadzone applied it still twitches.

Rather ruins immersion and makes it hard to aim

but now

I have gone from harmless to deadly using joystick and learned how to combat using a joystick and learned how to shoot fixed weapons using joystick.
To now go from joystick to controller or mouse I am going to have to re-learn how to shoot fixed weapons.

Well not entirely re-learn... some skills and knowledge is transferable... but still!

its a pain. but my controller is rather new and its a good quality one and I don't want to buy another joystick

SO! TL : DR I would like some suggestions on how to set up controls for a controller while taking note I will be attempting to use fixed weapons.

Nooooo! No controller! It's bad!

So you saying I should rather go keyboard and mouse?
Can't really afford to buy a new joystick as I am in financial issues the last few months

If yaw is the only thing that's broken you could just map yaw to something else :)

Have you tried unplugging the controller, rebooting & plugging it in again? I get this problem on my T16000 occasionally, recalibrating & cleaning the pot (by moving it through it's full range several times) or unplugging & rebooting usually fix it for a while.

Changing controller is going to take a while to get used to no matter what you change from & to, you already have a kb/m so if I were in your position I'd just use whatever I had until I could afford to get whatever I wanted.

Just put a deadzone on it.

No - that doesn't work because the fault varies in its parameters - from minor to extreme! Trust me, in the worst case scenario, that would have to be a hell of a deadzone!

My T-16000m stick developed this issue about two months after the warranty expired (Yeah, thanks Thrustmaster! Probably by design...like Roy Batty; time to die!). I reluctantly dismantled it - I hate having to do extra work just to engage in leisure activities!! - cleaned the potentiometer (or whatever it's called!) as best I could & hoorah!! - thought I'd fixed it...but that lasted about a week before the fault returned.

Taking the thing apart was so fiddly, I just decided to throw the joystick away & revert to using my Hotas X stick, which is a great piece of budget hardware...but very, very inaccurate in comparison; I've only just got used to using my fixed weps again with the help of 'Joystick Curves' & even then, I'm nowhere near my previous level.

well its not the usb port. tried switching ports about to no result.

sometimes plugging it out and back in works... sometimes... but having to fiddle my stick while plugging in and out the usb cable for 2 hours to get it to work just so I can play a lil elite is just.... well... not worth the time investment

If it works sometimes then it might not be a hardware fault. Mine doesn't seem to be. Irritating yes, but not the physical pots directly. If you have no money to throw at the problem, you have the time to try other solutions, ymmv.

This +1

By way of example I thought the fire button on my T16000m was failing (not working/double hitting). It wasn't, it was the game, an update or whatever. The problem has passed, the button works fine.

Controller works fine for me.
I even do the odd bit of PVP.
Which one are you using?
I use the Xbox one controller. I set the controls so they make sense to me and feel comfortable. Apparently using right stick down as take off control is weird to everyone else...

Had the same issue with HOTAS 4 on PS4 but it was with roll left / right.

First time I managed to get a new one since It was still under warranty but the second one did the same after around 250h of gaming (and no longer under warranty). I did some research and I found a little program to recalibrate the joystick and it helped a lot.

Which HOTAS are you using ?

I just couldn't fly without a HOTAS...no way that I go to controller...

My T.16000M with TWCS throttle hasn’t gone wrong yet, and it’s survived two years of abuse and even been carted around in a suitcase on a business trip with no ill-effects. Just get one of those.

Every time one of my expensive joysticks broke(3 so far) I would use my original Thrustmaster T-Flight as stand in 'till I could replace the expensive one.
Then I realised that the T-Flight was the most reliable hotas I have used.
No more expensive joysticks for me.
Get yourself a T-Flight.
Less than £40 and very reliable.

CH Products. I've been on the same set since 2010. No problems.

They last for many years. No Saitek/Logitech twitchy nonsense after a few months.

Controllers, on the other hand, are just too gamey.

Do yourself a favour, get a CH Products HOTAS setup with pedals.

Yup, if OP can afford a new stick the T16k is very reliable.

Been using the XBOX One controller for over two years and really like it - also works great when in VR since you never need to look at it and it's wireless (and controls the same as Elite on XBOX and PS4, except for the SRV ugh!)

First Tip - buy the new black model with blutooth. All non-black models I have (white, gray, etc) have drifting issues :-(

Second Tip - start with Default Context control setup. Holding A, B, X, or Y down brings up a popup menu (in case you forget the button combos)

Third Tip - set both bumpers to set throttle to 75% to avoid turns of shame. I also recommend adding the following (I forget what I mapped them to)
- 0 Throttle
- 100 Throttle
- Heatsick
- Chaff
- Next Destination (for when you select something other than your next destination)

Final Tip - copy your custom controller config into a new one so it doesn't get wiped on every release :-(

Good luck commander!

PS - While I gave up on my T Flight, I'm thinking of trying the T.16000M....
