Joystick button conflicts with new modes

I use the Warthog/throttle HOTUS. When I go into combat I press Joy 1 to fire and it changes the Mode to Analysis or sometimes it unlocks the target. Everything was perfect before this update. I am a gamer, not a script writer or a programmer, I just want to play the game, not spend my very little spare time fixing stuff

Hi, but no. I'm using a PC and it just says "Switch HUD Mode" which is set at Joy 3 or keystroke Left Alt+1. Isn't it impossible to cause a conflict in ED as it warns you if you have already bound a keystroke or joy/throttle button?

Ah no, I don't think there's a conflict.

What it's telling you is that you need to switch HUD mode in order to use whatever is currently bound to the key you are pressing.

Check your fire groups.

Good idea, but the mystery plot thickens.... When I am in Combat mode and targeted another ship it works for a few moments then the next press of Joy 1 *(main fire button on joystick) it either unlocks the targeted ship and/or inconsistently changes mode. I have checked the physical buttons of both joystick and throttle, all working fine. I see no conflicts in the bindings. I have also gone into the training missions for basic combat and it does exactly the same thing. The mode locks up for 10 -30 seconds (I can't change to combat mode, or even if I can, I can't switch to the desired main weapons) by which time I have been destroyed or close to it. Thank you so far for all your feedback.

Then maybe you shouldn't buy such complicated equipment and just use keyboard/mouse. :p

If a button is doing two things, then guess what, its mapped to two different things.

Look in your bindings for references to the button and references the command the button is doing.

Good luck.

The last time I talked with a CMDR who had those kind of problems his joystick ended up being the problem (loose connection inside somewhere). You could try a different USB socket in the meantime. Rule that out.

Just a thought: your power settings aren't requiring various selected modules to boot up before they become active - the only reason I could think of for a delay before something can be used???

I have the Warthog and yesterday I noticed when trying to change the bindings on my SRV that ED is seeing a full pull of the main trigger as [Joy1]+[Joy6], the trigger is a 2 stage but my ship primary fire is set to just [Joy1] since I started with the Thrustmaster Warthog default bindings. I would investigate if [Joy6] is set somewhere else in your custom bindings.

I would suggest going to https://edrefcard.info/ and getting a printout of your bindings, make sure to publish if you want to reference the printout for others to see here.

Warthog, hm?
I use the warthog as well. One of the cables between the handle and the base is broken.
Trust me, had this a few times.
You can test this with the thrustmaster device analizer. Fire it up press the fire-button, and twist the stick.
In certain positions you will still have contact, but then you move it back (or where ever) you loose contact and weird stuff happens.

Hi, The Warthog/throttle is awesome.... :)

I've looked in the bindings, doesn't seem to be any conflicts. Thanks you for your help :)

There are no loose connections. I've checked. But I will check again. Thank you. It may be that and I have missed something.

Not sure what is meant about power settings and booting up active/ modules etc.

had a look at Joy 6 settings. No Joy 6 except on the Throttle and they are different (I think).

https://edrefcard.info/binds/bdndfk - Here is the printout as Brianna suggests (Thank you :))

I will keep you all informed. This is great feedback so far. Thank you everyone.

Just checked the connection - pressed button 1 with no stick movement - had two readings, one for press one for release. Moved the stick around all axis and repeated the exercise, no change, all seems well

I meant to say the power priority assignments in the modules tab. If some items are offlined due to their priority then they take time to boot up.

Ok, I've done everything, everybody so far has asked:

1. New Bindings Log (I can see no conflicts), https://edrefcard.info/binds/dqjsff
2. Changed the USB slot,
3. Checked the connections by running Target software.

Symptoms:

When in Combat Mode and I target another ship, deploy my weapons and start firing the lasers, after a few seconds (inconsistently up to 20 seconds) I lose target lock, it jumps to Analysis Mode and I cannot change modes or weapons as it seems to lock up. After another 20-30 seconds it seems to unlock and then I can change to combat mode and weapons again, until it repeats.

Its a great game but this is destroying it for me!

All help appreciated

You aren’t using the Target software with any scripts? I’m assuming you are just binding everything in ED.

You have a weird problem there, the loss of control then a return of control doesn’t sound like a simple binding issue. You aren’t losing all control so it’s highly unlikely to be a USB problem, although there are sometimes weird problems with USB power. Have you tried a powered USB hub vs. a standard USB port on your PC?

The earlier suggestion of in-game power settings was related to exceeding your power plant output. You would get a notice to that effect, hard to miss but it would disable certain modules. It shouldn’t prevent switching unless the modules or weapons are shutdown.

You may also want to see if the generic Warthog bindings work for you. This might not tell you anything but it is something to eliminate.

I would also try the Target software again to test the throttle and joystick but simulate the actions you use in ED. If it’s a wiring problem it might only show up after a certain combination of button presses and stick movements.

I’d also check the Warthog drivers, make sure they aren’t old.

You can also verify that there’s nothing wrong with the ED install. The ED launcher has a verify files menu item.

Lastly, if everything checks out with your hardware you may have found a weird bug in ED.
