Newcomer / Intro Joystick Config

Hello!

Sorry if there are lots of posts like this or something that its easy to find.

This is my first psot here in the forum and im writing it while my ED is finishing the download. So i did a quick search and found nothing saying wich joysticks does ED support. I have an old Saitek Cyborg Evo, I know people use it to play but i wanted to know if there's like a default configuration thaat automatically is set in the game or if ED recognizes my joystick.

Otherwise, is there a good guide to manually configurate the joystick?

Sorry if I made myself confuse sometimes, its hard to write in english :D

Thank You

Don't be sorry ! your English is very good. I believe that most joy sticks are plug and play. I am hoping to have a Thrustmaster A10 HOTAS by the end of the week so I'll know for sure by then.
Sorry I can't be more helpful right now.

Hi,
I also have an old Saitek Cyborg 3D! Just bought elite today and my PC is still downloading the files but i'm looking forward to having a go.

If Windows recognises your joystick you should have no problem but you will have to configure the buttons for yourself, at least I did with my ancient SideWinder 2 stick that I rescued from the attic. However it is a very straightforward process - when the game loads up from the menu go into "Options" and then "Controls" and from there on it is quite intuitive (basically scroll down selecting each function and then pressing the button or joystick trigger that you want to correspond).

Have fun and I hope you enjoy the game.

Well this is actually not the case. I tryed the Competition Pro (no joke :D ...for old school feeling) and its plug+n play in windows since a modern version of it use USB as well, but ED dont even show it in the configs nor does it work at all. (In WinUAE I can use it without probs)

But the Thrustmaster Warthog I use was already predefined in ED including throttle. Its just a bit confusing since both parts connect via USB and ED shows the joystick and the trottle as "joystick" in the config. So, I started writing down manually where I saved what button since there are many look double but they are rather joystick or throttle configured. Overall I needed 1-2 days to get used to it at all, but a joystick is definitely a must for this game ;)

So, I will take the OP's question a step further, as I too, am new to the forums & ED: Is there a page, or can someone direct me to an area that provides the optimal setting for the Logitech Freedom 2.4 Cordless? I found more success (relative) using custom settings rather than the joystick default the issue is there are so many moving parts that require mapping that my mind is jelly. Has some kind soul found optimal setting for keyboard, mouse, & Logitech Freedom 2.4? Thanks.

And a similar request for my Thrustmaster A10 Warthog which is arriving tomorrow!! :D:p:D:cool:

I believe I saw it mentioned above or in another section about other joystick issues, and on the net, that there is a default, or the default accommodates your Warthog. I looked at those but peeps are asking upwards of $500 on Amazon, eBay, and that is crazy. For that kind of layout I'd go with CH products all the way. I've seen that there flight sim equipment works well with ED. Makes me sorry I sold my CH stuff a few years ago. Good luck!

Map the basic controls to the stick (thrust, yaw, roll, pitch, fire, etc.), then take it for a spin in the training simulator to make sure that your config is sane.

Make sure you map your combat controls. You don't want to be caught short if interdicted.

Start playing the main game. As you play, you'll find that you come to want certain controls. You can then map them as you need them.

Personally, I'd use the base buttons as clutch buttons as well as function buttons to dramatically increase the available functionality. For example, the hat switch would normally control translational thrust. When a base button is held down, it might instead control power distribution.

I find incrementally mapping controls to be far easier to remember than adopting someone else's config. Your mileage may vary of course

Really appreciate your time. I saw a lot of folks having issues with cockpit view on the Logitech Freedom 2.4. I was able through some trial and error to bind Stick-button 06 as a 'toggle' then assigned the up, down, left, right views to the hat switch itself. Toggle off returns to thrusters, freed up a lot of keys for future use/growth. You are right, it's best to look at some configurations that work for others and then adapt in a way that makes sense for me. I come from years of MS Flight Simulator and am pretty comfortable with setting up a configuration it was just, like, OMG there are 80 million switches and all customizable, reminded me of X-Plane which has a bit of a steep set-up curve as well. Voice Attack & ED Voice-pack next. I wanted to learn key mapping before I took immersion a bit further. I saw Cmdr Marco Polo's 3,000 dollar (British pounds, mind you) system, just 'wow'. You can catch it on YouTube. Makes me want go back to CH Products and build up another cockpit. I just need to add an addition onto the house, is all, lmao. Again, thanks for the input.

Thanks ! Excellent tips. I think it might take a little while before I am totally comfortable with it as I am so used to K/board and mouse set up.

How do people map the yaw and lateral thrust buttons to a HOTAS? I use these controls frequently

PS It arrives in ONE hour! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I am such a big (41 yr old) kid!

It takes a little practice. I used the 'custom' profile and picked an obvious key and then practiced remapping it to and from another key to understand the process. Once you do a couple of them it is easy. It seems overwhelming due to the number of keys. What I did was start with 'launch' tutorial and just worked with the key bindings associated with that. Plus you get to practice the launch sequence. Then move to 'docking' tutorial, do the same. I found if you break it down that way, it is much easier to manage.

ED should have a preprogrammed profile for your x52 joystick. I personately only modyfied the standart setup for my x52pro a little bit....

I have a Warthog myself. Yaw I don't have mapped as I have pedals, but lateral thrust I have mapped to the 4-way switch under the index finger of the throttle hand. I believe the game has a profile for the default Warthog already shipped with it, so it's a place to start.

If you start getting antsy to use the TARGET software to do some more advanced stuff (like pressing a button does one thing, long-pressing the same button does something else), then you'll have to make your own profile. The default profile sees the Warthog as two separate "joysticks". When you use the TARGET software, it disconnects the two joysticks at the Windows driver level and replaces it with one single "virtual" joystick - which will need to be mapped in the game.

ive got as far as unpacking ,,, I am blown away by this kit!
Cant wait to take a test flight.. First I have to map stuff hmm

Greetings Hurst,

I also have a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 joystick (not force feedback). It works smoothly when I'm flying Falcon 4.0/BMS, but I can't get it to work well with Elite Dangerous. I'm only in the training modes right now, and have a hard time destroying the containers floating in space. The targeting brackets always seems to move past the containers in a sudden jump. It is not the smoothness I get when flying in Falcon.

Should I increase the deadzone sliders to overcome this tendency? If you have a good setup on your joystick bindings, would you possibly share them? I don't want to actually login as a Commander until I have better control of my ship.

Thanks,

mike

What you may be seeing is the effect of the (very) limited auto-aim facility of the fixed weapons. That tutorial mission has fixed multi cannons mounted on your ship, and they will auto aim within a very, very small circle in the center of where the screen pip/aim point is located. If you get outside of that circle, then the aim point slides back to center.

I moved the translational thrust off the Index finger hat on the throttle to the thumb hat on the stick. It just feels much more natural to me to have it there, probably because I started playing with a crappy Cyborg V.1.

I basically swapped power management and translational thrust around. However, I am a confused southpaw - I can't write for love nor money with my right hand, but I use a mouse, swing a golf club and use a joystick with it, to give three examples off the top of my head.

I mapped yaw to the rotational function on the stick - it should rotate by about 30° in your hand. It's not as sensitive as pedals, but given how slow the rotation is anyway, it's not really a problem.

Well, here are my binds for my X52 Pro. You will need to change the file extension to .binds from .txt as the forum software doesn't allow .binds as an extension (probably for security purposes, as .txt files aren't executable.)

Put the file in C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Be aware that I'm playing through the steam client, so some of the file locations may well be different, and you may well already have a Custom.binds kicking around somewhere. I strongly recommend that you search your whole computer for Custom.binds and delete any files you already have before you drop that in there.

It uses every button on my stick, and involves using the E button as a modifier button to cycle through non-hostile targets.

Like I said though, I find it far easier to remember mappings when I make them myself from scratch, building them incrementally as I need them. That way, I own the bindings; they're mine.

Omg! I'm having to learn to fly all over again!
its such a completely different feel, getting to grips with where to map everything ,,,, figuring what works best etc plus getting used to the weighting and sensitivity differences ,,, it's a huge change, I was pretty handy with my mouse and k/board but I'm struggling to shoot straight in the tutorials and landing was a real adventure !
