Joystick Controls - Mapping Software Suggestions Requested

(I'll leave this one up, as it's conceivable it might be of use to others with similar issue.)

Good (local time of day), Forum.

I'm using a two-joystick setup for ED, rather than a HOTAS. One stick is a three-axis and serves for rotational controls, while the other is only two-axis and I use it for translation, with two of its buttons for the Z-axis. What I'd like to do is find some joystick mapping software that would let me use, say, the trigger button on that translation stick as a sort of 'shift key', and trick ED into seeing a third axis while the button's pressed.

I understand this might seem like an over-complicated approach, but if anyone has any suggestions for mapping software that might do this I'd appreciate it. I have been looking online but a lot of the possibilities are on obscure sites I've not heard of. I'd welcome guidance on whether there's any 'standard' software for this.

Thanks for reading.

If you're prepared to write simple Python code you can use FreePIE and vJoy with any combination of devices.

Thank you both. I'm not great at programming, even at a limited level, but I'll give Joystick Gremlin a try, and who knows - I might learn a little Python along the way. 😀
