Some of you watching the Kickstarter may have seen me bemoaning I couldn't get the Joystick to work in GLFrontier, or the DosBox versions &c...

Well now I have, and I am going to share this with all of you.

If anyone here wants to play ANY game with a joystick - even if it only accepts keyboard or mouse input, here is how.

It is called JoyToKey - AND IT WORKS!!!

http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey English Version.htm

I have a Logitech Freedom 2.4 Cordless joystick,

It has 4 axis - Pitch, Roll, Yaw and Throttle (if you can call that last one an axis ;) )

It also has 10 buttons and an 8-way hat.

I could not get Logitech's Wingman software to work on my Vista machine, but that JoyToKey stuff does the trick.

It supports multiple profiles.

I can now map my most used controls to my stick.

so Throttle up and Throttle down (funnily enough are NOT being mapped to the throttle), but to 2 buttons on the base so I can Engines off dogfight :D

I'll set the hat to view, a couple of other buttons to star dreamer, then there are my lasers and missiles, &c...

Life is now good again

(not that the great news of the successful KS doesn't help too - I just have to try and explain it all to my wife now :( )

Her "Is it going to save the world?"
Me "Err, no"
Her "Then what is the point of it?"
Me " ????? "

unfortunately I don't think that there is anything I can say to her that she will accept :(

Any way, I digress.

Joystick Support for all versions of Elite old and new - just needs configuring first :D

Enjoy

Hi CmdrBond
Welcome to the Frontier Forum and thank you for your many posts on the KS site. :)
Thats a handy bunch of info you posted there to help players of the original games, well done!

As long as I can use my Mouse/Keyboard combo I will be happy. Never been any good with a Joystick or a Xbox type controller.

Played way too many MMOs. :)

i'm exactly the same, much to my son's delight when he's "owning" me on FPS games

Is it force feedback?

My joystick isn't - I don't know if the software supports that, but I doubt it.

As for you Keyboard and Mice users, I am in agreement with you, but I also like to use the Joystick from time to time, and now I can with these old games.

You can try - I had better luck just mapping [ENTER] and [R-SHIFT] to 2 of the buttons on the base of my stick.

This is the problem when there doesn't seem to be a thruster %age setting. And don't for get reverse.

*sings*
There's Thargons on the starboard bow, ...

As many of you know, I mainly use the keyboard but when running emulated to get the real C64 experience I use the SAME joystick I did when I used the C64.

yep the good old Atari 2600 ones. I just got an adapter and pow. I don't like modern joysticks they have way too much give and FF ones are way too expensive but ones from 1982 suit me perfectly :)

and yes I still have the same original joystick I played ELITE with on the C64 in 1985 :)

Hopefully I can get this working with the orig version in an emulator (pushing it) or at the very least with Elote:TNK for those days when time is against me! Will be trying tomorrow (although I hope my T Flight Hotas isn't too bells and whistley for this two games!
